For £250 I’d be looking at custom IEMs.

Interesting. I have a pair of Kennerton earbuds which are as good as my SR80s. Only thing is the fact you can’t really guarantee a satisfactory sound and it appears I’m very hard to please when it comes to headphones.

You do know that choosing headphones is the hardest thing to A friggin nightmare actually I’m glad you said that. I reckon you’re also onto something with tone controls. I’m looking. For a Schiit Loki. I’m also getting an Audiolab 8000a and May use it as a headphone amp to benefit from time controls.

I had a beresford DAC but it was utter Sh#t and so badly made I wanted to sling it. I Don’t think I could give another Beresford house room.

I use a SMSL 'SAP-9' with Citronic 'CE-22' at the mo. When i first got the 'SAP-9' The volume control felt W#nk, say no more it was plastic, i fitted an heavier aluminium knob. Feels ok now..

I heard the Meze 99:classics today. For me they were a significant step down from the AKGs. I didn’t tike or rate them at all. I didn’t even like the build quality tbh. I guess it does advance me somewhat. I’m clearly not going to find anything remotely close to what I’d find acceptable. Headphones? I’m out.

😮 Summat wrong with you, lad. 🤪 I’ve come to the conclusion that I just hate headphone sound. They are all much of a muchness. Some are better and worse, but I’d not give the best ones I’ve heard more than 2 or 3 out of 10. I remember folk telling me I needed to hear Audeze Planar Magnetics because they were so different from dynamic headphones. What a load of bollocks. They sounded the same as any other headphone. If you didn’t know a Planar from an ordinary headphone before listening , there’s no way you would be able to tell the difference. I also got to hear a large pair of Dalis with a Quad Vena(?) amp streaming lossless. Utter, utter trash. Those Dalis sounded like the cabinets were made of cardboard and the drivers were 50p a pop. Made me utterly ecstatic over what I have at home. I don’t know the price of the amp and speakers I heard today, but I could easily top it for £100buying used kit off EBay. I was so bloody lucky to grow up in the 80s!

Hahahahahahaha! Those Dalis are £4K a pair! A pair of Wharfedale Diamonds would bury them!
The Quad amp is only £649 bit even so, you can get something really good used for that money and it won’t be turned out from Chinese slave labour either.

I wouldn't pay crazy money for upper tier Dali's. To my ears their entry level Zensor range are the sweet spot.

You could hear the cheap cabinet singing along with theses, so they are clearing raking in a massive profit for tarted up basic kit. I saw a pair of Klipsch “Reference” in the window, I’ve seen better built speakers under £100. Not sure of the price but they were clearly tat dressed up as hifi.

I used to lust after the smaller Rubicon 3. But can't justify the 1.6k price tag. I'll stick with my trusty old Zensor 3.

I have a feeling that it’s not hard or expensive to make decent speakers.
Shitty sound has some obvious causes,
1. Crappy cabinets, but you can always brace or mass damp. 2. Shitty wire. Easy and cheap to improve on. 3. Cheap or aged crossover components. Again not that expensive to improve on. 4. Drivers not sealed. A fiver to sort. 5. Garbage foam or wadding. Get rid of most of it, use deflex or long hair wool for what’s left. On no condition use block foam. It’s poison to the sound,
The drivers and tweeters are rarely the cause of bad sound imo.
Take care of

Excuse the daft question. Just out of curiosity, Westie. Did you feel/touch the Dali's cabinets?

All I can suggest then is the Grado 325's. I don't play with exotics because the more expensive audio gets the more usually it goes polite and bland ie Koetsu carts. I don't like bland. The 325's are exciting. But an hour max before you get sore ears. I think thre most open sounding I've had were actually some Audio Technica air . They even have their drive units at an angle to sound like they're in front. Big fancy things. I did Like them but i think they're extinct. All in all I think you have to compromise with headphones. I use them when I have to. Never as a preference . I think it's important that you realise they are always inferior to the real thing. I think that's one reason why hi fi is dead. Kids growing up thinking ear buds and headphones sound realistic.

I'm not saying they can't sound stunning. Just that they're not as good and realistic as loudspeakers . They haven't got the physics for starters. How many audio/music lovers do you know that would rather have phones ? You ever been to a concert and been given a pair of headphones ? Nonsense , Andre. And you know it.

Why do you always bring the live music card up? Hi-Fi sound is not about re creating a live performance cos for one it aint gonna happen. You know how your music wants to sound to your ears.. As for bass depth, instrument separation & all that fancy malarky is certainly possible.Just that your crappy old records are holding that lot back a tad

Keep yer hair on ffs . No need for abuse. I only state the obvious. Phones are never going to be as good as speakers. They are a second choice for serious listening to everybody.... except you. And that's only because you can't have any speakers in the flat 🙄. If and when you get the permission and the oportunity to have a system that sounds good instead of the fire hazard cheapest tip rat junk shop stuff you keep buying and championing then fucking discarding then all of a sudden your speakers will be the dogs bollocks and headphones will be shite. You always do it ffs. All bullshit from you as usual.
