I think I’m on a hiding to nothing. Every headphone I’ve tried has been extremely poor at best. That’s through several amps and headphone amps. I’d really like the convenience of headphones but even things like Audeze, which others seem to rate have utterly sucked. Decent Grados just about get the required detail but they are crude and have no soundstage. I need something that’s a level of magnitude better than Grados and I don’t think it exists. I could pick up a cheap Cambridge CD and amp and any pair of speakers you care to mention and it would annihilate any headphone I’ve heard, Unless there’s something way, way different to the norm out there. I’m likely to be disappointed,

AKGs to me always sound like they can't be arsed getting out of the box. Unlike the Grado's which are lively but uncomfortable and only suitable for indoor use . Even wind can make them . I done relly know how Grado get away with the poor quality. My first 80's simply fell to pieces. I told you about the Meze's. Believe me , I've tried most real world phones and never topped them. Plus they're bloody lovely things. See the white ones...glorious ! Up to you though. But there's some real shoit out there with big badges and big prices on them. Let's face it , in general apart from maybe 2 models Sennheiser make the biggest load of junk ever.

They do look really nice, I wonder if any shops in Newcastle or even Leeds stock them and would let me listen? I think I’d like to try before I buy on the next ones I trey. I might just b wine of the folk who don’t like headphones period. You’re right about Grados. The build is no way worth the sums asked,

Westie, at the end of the day just trust your ears. I respect your honesty.
Must give those Meze's a try someday. Are they easy to drive?

You don't have to. I'll check out some reviews. Have you also tried the cheaper (plastic) Meze's, engine?

No I haven't. I bought these on a whim on the net. I wanted something plastic free. Which these are or at least 99%. The company says all parts can be replaced and bolted on by the customer. Which appeals aswell. Proper wood ear pieces which I think adds a certain timbre to the sound. Geddit ?

Has anyone here tried Beyerdynamic?

The little Schiit should arrive tomorrow. I’m wondering if the AKGs are in need of more drive. I’m only using my iPad. Now that I recal, even my RS2s sounded Sh#t from the iPad.

Ah, that ipad is a big no no. Try the amp tomorrow and report back! S. I don’t know why the sound should be so Sh#t, as I’m using lossless files. But I guess it must be the sound processor. I’ve waited ages for the little Schiit so I hope it comes tomorrow. The AKGs are comfortable and non fatiguing. They just need a big sonic boost, will the Schiit give them a lift? The AKGs are also, completely unused so maybe need time? I hope so. Still fancy those Meze though

Years ago people raved about the 701's sounding good with the Heed Canamp. I only used Schiit Asgard 2 with 701's. Sounded good enough through my ears. S.

You could always try Sennheiser HD700's. No way are these dull and thuddy.

The phones and amp I use are so close to what my speakers sound like, I am happy. Always been one of my aims is to have everything sounding as close as possible to each other.

You could always try Sennheiser HD700's. No way are these dull and thuddy. I’m going off experience of 30 years ago here, but Sennheisers were so dreadful, they put me off headphones until now. I bought the top of the range back then and they were unspeakably bad. I’ve heard better defined bass from disco speakers. I think they were 540 Reference? Have Sennheiser changed their family sound completely? They would need to if I was to bother trying them. Lemos sums up what I’m after. A close alternative to my main system. So far I haven’t heard anything that would even begin to give me hope that such a thing exists. I’ll listen to the Mezes tomorrow, but they aren’t likely to have the calibre of source and cables that will make it worthwhile. I’m going to park the whole idea of headphones until I have a better source for headphone listening and some far better cables. Then I will try some better headphones at home. If I have to buy used and sell on, it’s no biggie. Seems to be the only way I will have any chance of success.
