I might take a step up from my SR80s. I’ve Had RS2e and could go there again but I’ve heard almost no other cans, I do like the Grado clarity though. Spending no more than £250 and buying used, has anyone got a suggestion for a Grado beater?

I believe most of the Grado models differ only in the ear-pads/cups and supposed tolerances which would be difficult to challenge I suspect. Loads written about it here and there. I found like the Prestige cartridge models, the very expensive top reference models were bland and uninteresting in their 'refinement.'
See about ear pads/cushions whatever. There's some real expensive crap headphones out there and no two heads are the same as well.

Have owned a couple V6's. Clean 'n' Crisp is what my ears heard. They remind me of the AE1 Loudspeaker.

I bought these. Meze Classics last yeast. I find my grade 325i's too uncomfortable. I'll keep these forever. They're a revelation. Closed but don't sound like it. Very neutral. Comfy . Gorgeous things and all the parts are replaceable. photo url

Westie. If you want wide airy presentation like your Spica's. Give the AKG K701 a try.

If you like the Grado sound, try a second hand pair of PS500, you should be able to pick them up well in your budget and for me they are by far the best headphones in their range (including all the silky expensive ones)

Westie. Just in case you missed it. On page 1, I recommended the AKG K701. They're good if you want an 'outside of head' kind of sound. Nice wide sound staging. To a degree the 701's should mimic your Spica's.

I started by putting bids in Auctionstealer. First one one bear fruit was the AKGs. If they don’t fit the bill, I will sell on and try the others on Auctionstealer until the next one lands. I will be looking at the Hifiman, the Oppo and the Meze 99 next if the AKGs don’t do it for me.

The 701's has a more detailed refined sound over the 80's. The 80's can sound a bit brash in comparison. 701's are pretty revealing cans and will easily highlight any bad recording. Have fun. S.

I have a pair of the Meze 99 Classics and also HiFiMan He400i. The Meze are warmer, more bassy and (I guess obviously) do sound more closed in the the HE400is. I prefer the 400is I think but have to use the closed back Meze 99s if my wife is watching tv. More than welcome to try them if you're anywhere near Lincolnshire...

That’s a lovely offer thanks, but I’m way up North between Durham and Newcastle. The 400i are definyely on my list though as they sell used for as little as £100. Gotta be worth a try.

Got the AKGs today. Nicely made but they are a looooong way short of the level of sound quality I want. I do get the extra space they give but they are severely lacking in clarity.
Hifiman next, I think.

I need a week or two to clear some bits. I’m drowning in stuff and there’s at least two more bits to land.

I will say this for the AKGs, the build, finish and packing for the price is great. They are better in this respect than the £570 Grados I had, TBH I haven’t heard an over-ear headphone that has sounded anything other than abysmal. They have all sounded dull and thuddy with no clarity. I still haven’t heard any headphone that has climbed out of the “sub-fi” category so I may be onto a loser even trying others. IME headphones suck badly.
