What is the best product to use to isolate the transistors and regulators from the heat sinks? I have some thermal compound, but I am wondering if this is suitable. Thermal compound conducts which is no good. You need something like this which insulates. They conduct heat though, not electricity. www.amazon.co.uk/Thermal-Heatsink-Insulator-Insulating-Particles/dp/B00KV6P828I found out the hard way. lol

Thanks. Does it not depend on the thermal compound used though? I have non electrically conductive stuff, but was not sure if this was ok? It is the stuff used to build the Power 686 boards.
The pads look cheap enough though, not to take a chance.

Are this much better than a Schaffner? I can get an equivalent Schaffner cheaper. It seems very similar? here. I need to order some hook up cable and other bits, so it makes economic sense, if it is good enough.

What size transformer case/shield do I need for the James O-ring? I may as well add one to cut down any noise...

Have you ordered it? They can pot it for you. They did for mine.

Maybe, mine is super quiet though, no noise issues. Noticeably quieter than the toroid I had in before it.

Looking at a soft start as well. Most on Ali-E and the bay seem to be around 2000W. I don't need that, and I notice the last one Oli used was different to what I can find....

Just ordered the CMR 2.2uF caps, and the soft start.
I am also going to order some OCC cable for the signal wires, as the 2mm2 stuff I have is probably too big, and not easy to twist together. I am thinking 20 or 22 AWG will be ok?

So, a small brown envelope arrives from BBA Towers, and I am working from home. So, what do you do rather than risk losing parts? Solder them in place, whilst participating in a meeting. I guess you can say that I have officially started....

View AttachmentSolder them in place, whilst participating in a meeting. I guess you can say that I have officially started.... That's the stuff. Those are the most critical parts, but I'd still try and match the channels as best you can, as it helps with balanced and image stability. Worth the effort. 100%

All the resistors have now been fitted, except for the 6M8. I have also fitted the relays and valve bases. It is starting to take shape now.

I'll give you your dues, you don't hang about with your projects Cagey. Nearly forgot, it's just when it comes to choosing a cartridge that you dither about.

Nearly forgot, it's just when it comes to choosing a cartridge that you dither about. I always knew what cartridge I wanted. I just didn’t want to spend that much on one, so I spent a lot of time looking for alternatives, then I bought the one I really wanted.

Only pulling your leg, when you've got a working cartridge you can take your time looking for it's replacement. I've been looking for valves, and since I will not be able to listen to them yet, I've been waiting for bargains to come along, I think I'm sorted now except for 4 KT88's. I've put in quite a number of bids on different ones, if I won I'd got a bargain, but mostly I've been outbid but that never bothered me. Strangely enough, 4 days ago, I put a bid in of £166 on a laptop and went to bed (6hrs time difference) next day I find out I won at £142 so very happy.

Also to make up the basket so I didn’t have to pay postage, I added the Schurter filter to my last Mouser order. They have contacted me to say they cannot ship this to individuals. I have asked why... I also told them that they can remove it from my order, but if I need to pay postage, I will cancel my order and go elsewhere.

Apparently it is VAT related.
