If it makes you smile it's money well spent, are you a fine weather biker?

If it makes you smile it's money well spent, are you a fine weather biker? I am nowadays - many years ago my only transport was a motorbike and rode in everything from rain, snow and sub zero temperatures - not fun. Currently it is just for pleasure now so if I sense a bit of rain or a chill in the air, then the bike stays locked up!!

It's called 'growing up' You'd have loved riding your bike in Cambodia, even better Thailand (the roads are good) somehow the air seems 'thinner' and you don't get that heavy breeze.

when you said you were looking at Triumphs I thought you meant classics not a serious race bike.
What I know about bikes you could write on a rizla paper but it looks like it will go pretty fast.

Sorry - I did consider a more classic Triumph but while I can still ride something 'fast' I thought I would carry on in that vain. A few years from now it might be something more classical (or at least classical looking)

Issues with the Pure Sound A30 valve amp so rummaged in the garage to see what I could find - my trust Audiolab 8000A I bought new in '85 Still sounding good (why have I been through other amps?) Looks almost lost in the rack

Since moving the Audiolab into service I have decided to stick with an integrated amp so a few of my bits will be up for sale soon. Once the other kit has been moved on I think I will look to see what is out there that can better the Audiolab for SQ but still be flexible (5 inputs, headphone and built in phono stage which are both very good) but wouldn't mind remote control (never had that on any HiFi I have owned...) will wait to see if what I have sells and how much I can raise before asking the question about what to get etc

Some folks have it in for those Audiolab 8000A amps. Admittedly it's decades since I owned / heard one, but I have fond memories of it.
Now I come to think about it, after the 8000A I moved on to Audiolab monoblock power amps. 8000P, that's them, I think. I have even fonder memories of those - smooth, clean, detailed, controlled and gutsy.
So you didn't miss the Puresound A30 too much once the 8000A was reinstated?

Not really missing the A30 at the moment as I was surprised how good the 8000A is presenting the music - seems to work very well with the speakers to my ears. Wife is happy with the sound also but does miss the glow of the valves! I think if the A30 had more inputs and also a headphone socket then I wouldn't move it on.

Swapped out the 6N8P valves in the A30 for the 6H8C valves that Optical sent me and they made a nice difference. Seemed to open up the sound stage nicely to my ears. But, due to the cost of leccy etc I have boxed the amp up and put it in storage until the cost of living sorts itself out (if it never does, then I will have to sell one of my kids and get the valve amp back out ) Put the trusty 8000A back in service and loving it - not everyone's cup of tea but mine but I have always liked it! Back from my hols now so hope to start doing more tweaking/listening. A few pics from the hols:

gninnam They're lovely photos, but where were they taken? You might as well sell the A30 (cheaply to me ) since leccy won't be coming down in price.

The surrounding areas are very pretty (and hilly). Leccy will come down but not for a few years so I will wait, so not for sale (well, not yet anyway )

I'm interested in what mods you've done to your Orbe because I've run out of saliva after all that drooling over the SP-10!

I'm interested in what mods you've done to your Orbe because I've run out of saliva after all that drooling over the SP-10! Sure, no problem. It started as a plain vanilla Orbe then I was one of the team that helped Pete from the WAM forum develop the replacements for the springs which hold the chassis from the plinth. They are now 'Pete's Pylon's" but pre-production (still work the same) and help to reduce all the issues the original springs produce. Second was replacing the original ball bearing with another one (think it was Delrin but will need to double check) and using a mixture of engine oil and a silicon mixture for the bearing lube, again will try and dig out what it was...) Next was a change of platter, though, as good as it is, I have moved back to the original platter for now. The bobbins under the arm board were also replaced for better isolation, again using something similar to how the footers work Finally, I replaced the feet with another one of Pete's developments "Petes Pads" for better isolation using butyl rubber between the footer. Added up these changes which do not cost much in the grand scheme make a huge difference and elevate the TT to punch even higher

The bearing mixture is - silicone grease and zx1 with mobil one Sounds exotic! You'll have to let me know ratios and also the details on the ballbearing. I'm using the oil from my old Nottingham Analogue TT on my Orbe currently. All looks very good above as well, thanks!

Had a change this afternoon on the Orbe and changed the standard platter back to this one: Had to tweak the pots in the PSU as the diameter is slightly smaller and got the speed to be bang on 33.33 so happy Sounding very good so far (seems to have better control on the lower registers with this platter - to my ears anyway which is all that counts )

Always has a great band too. They'd be even greater without him crooning along. Sounding like Stevie Wonder's re__rded younger brother (not sure if I can say that). And his hats are stupid. Although I do like 'Space Cowboy' when it's the David Morales remix.

Just had a poke round my CD shelves, and it turns out I do have one of his (Rock Dust Light Star). Can't remember buying or ever playing it though. So I'm going to stick it on now, and prove myself wrong.
I can't bring myself to look directly at the cover though, with his stupid face smirking stupidly at me from under that stupid head dress.
Apologies, this is your blog, I'll go away now.
