Massive over reaction in my view. Isn't it obvious that these measures aren't working in Italy ? Italians are far too touch-feely, can't keep their hands to themselves, bound to be worse than the uk. The situation is very serious but I reckon your right about the over reaction. The media also have a lot to answer for in whipping this up to fill space. This germ, unless we come up with a vaccine sharpish is going to be with us for years, you can't possibly keep these measures in place indefinitely. Hopefully when this is all finally over, we realise what an asset the NHS(if it hasn't imploded) is and start funding it properly.........................as if

The Italians also have a large number of the older generation. France has introduced the same measures as Italy to slow the Virus spreading. The hospitals can not cope otherwise...

I live in London in Lewisham Borough, the local hospital has now run out of urgent beds and is asking others to take Covid suspected patients. The case counter last time I looked - yesterday - showed us as having 22 confirmed cases in the borough. 22 and now no more beds for anymore - and by extension no more for any other critical illness, heart attacks etc .
This is just the start of it, it is an exponential contagion. If you think these measures are an over reaction then you need to wake up, it will get a lot worse. Arguably they are late and I am not given to hyperbole.

If a relatively simple flu variant can cause this much damage, what happens when this little beasts mutate? I'm not really one for sensationalism, but this virus has me deeply concerned. Just paid £6 for 9 bog rolls for me Ma. She has COPD and is self isolating. Funnily enough, her employer (the NHS) is pressuring her to go to work. She's 67, has the lungs of a 90yr old and has been in bed with chest infections all over the winter. I've told her gaffer that I'll start legal proceedings if she gets COVID-19 as he has been made aware of her condition. They've backed off now and told her to stay home for the foreseeable. Its stressful enough with having to fight employers to adhere to the government's plan.

Good for you, she shouldnt be out, the main disease vectors for the elderly ,are shops, family contact and public transport. For younger people its pubs and social gatherings.
My parent are mid 70s with a lung condition and prostrate cancer respectively. We are doing their shopping for them so they don't have to go to crowded places etc.
I am self isolating but going for walks and will get on the bike when the weather is better. People need to realise in the absence of a cure/vaccine the only way to avoid this is a change in behaviour until it becomes available.

I am nearly 64, considerer myself reasonably healthy, parents have passed, and I don't have any children. Please tell me why I should not be allowed to go to the pub, supermarket, or even travel the world. If individuals feel they have dependants that may be vulnerable it is up to them to take care, let the rest of us carry on living our lives.

Because you may have the virus already, and even though it may not affect you, you could be spreading it to everybody you meet.

Today is day 7 of confinement for me. Everything is going well. I get to listen to a lot of music.
The only thing is that we are getting through a bit more food, as we eat three meals a day at home, rather than the usual two for most of the week. The roads outside of my house looks quieter.
Everyone at home appears to be healthy.

Good to know this thing isn't stopping the mercenarys making a dollar eh ? Well hopefully they abolish that nonsense and she (if willing) joins back up. Her skills will be needed greatly in the coming weeks. Put the letter on Facebook. Put pressure on them to react

I can see why they need to do this. Whilst for many, the virus may, if contracted, be no more than a nuisance for a week or so, but for the minority, it will be very serious indeed and there just aren't the hospital beds to treat the peak which is estimated as something like 500,000 with serious infections. Given that's a few orders of magnitude greater than the UK's total available intensive care bed capacity, the only sensible thing left to do is to spread that peak over a much longer time period so that lives ultimately will be saved. In Italy, they shut down bars and restaurants way too late, as the infection had spread far and wide with victims soon outstripping bed availability. In Germany, early testing has resulted in more cases being diagnosed early and more self isolation at an early stage but their reported 0.1% death rate doesn't include patients with underlying health issues, only the death rate amongst the healthy, whereas Italy's 2.2% includes all reported cases. You have to be careful how you read some of these statistics. One thing is for sure, those with underlying serious health issues and the elderly are well advised to self quarantine for the foreseeable future. I'm in that camp and all social contact for me is over for probably much of the rest of the year if you follow the advice to the letter. We shall probably see a large rise in cases over the next week or two which will justify the action Boris has had to take.

Just got back from Sainsbury's and the place is empty. No veg , no food no soap , nuffinkt. I'm getting emails daily from Mr Sainsbury telling me there's not going to be a problem. This morning I sat overlooking the main road while strumming my guitar. Usually its choca with supermarket lorries. Today , not one in two hours. Someone is bullshitting.

Because you may have the virus already, and even though it may not affect you, you could be spreading it to everybody you meet. If I had the virus I would be home in bed. Please read my post again, it's up to those who feel they might be vulnerable to take extra precautions. Anyway just booked my flight out of here, hoping Boris doesn't shut down the airports or flights get cancelled.

Take the example of the Brit who came back from Singapore, went skiing in the Alps on holiday and went back home. He passed it on to several people without showing any ill effects. It is your choice, but I am not going out anytime soon.
