all the time u owe someone money u cant class yaself as rich
only way u can do that is if u owe not a single penny...coz all the time u owe money to someone you're in the firing line of going bankrupt in the blink of an eye. clear all debts and 100k in cash in the bank is my refrence point as being well off

I don't ever want to class myself as rich. I just want to live a comfortable lifestyle and provide for my family.

I don’t think BoJo is ready to bend over and take his trousers down. Not until Trump asks him to, anyway. it would be really good if any political discussion could be kept at the 'over sixteens' level. There's always PFM if you want to play in the kiddie's leagues.

owe nobody a penny and sleep better i garantee you that. so u dont pay the bills? all they do is disconnect u. thing is your life can be flowing along and everything going awesome then in the blink of an eye things can go bad. rates go through the roof then say u both get cancer and cant work..last thing u want if u get really ill is having to worry about money. THE GOOD TIMES NEVER LAST..nothing does..interest only is utter madness and will only end one way..

If I was Bill Gates rich I'd pay cash for everything. Like in 'Brewster's Millions.' Just have a security man with a briefcase full of cash handcuffed to him who follows you about.

I've heard they don't let you buy brand new cars for cash in the UK anymore. Too many people doing it to launder drug money apparently.

A man should always carry cash. People I work with never do, just use their cards. They reckon if they have cash on them they'll just spend it all on crap. FFS try some self restraint! Then the ice cream van comes round and they want an ice cream, but he doesn't take cards. So they have to borrow off me. Don't understand that mentality.

At least now they have this swipe thing they aren't holding up everyone else whilst they take 10 minutes to type their pin number in. Poxy students are the worst. You don't want to get stuck behind them in the shop. Five quid's worth of pop and sweets, and their card declines. So they put something back and try again for four quid. Still declined. Sort your fucking life out you deadbeat!

I spent 4 years on the dole when all the money I had was whatever cash was in my pocket. A lot of the time it was just a couple of quid. So I like to have some cash in my pocket, say about a ton. Even decades on I still find it re-assuring.

Even decades on I still find it re-assuring. Spent six weeks on the dole when I was nineteen, but I was also moonlighting on a building site, so I've never been unemployed. Until I took my early retirement of course.

1990-1994 there was nothing doing here. I went in to sign on one time and it was a young bloke, really keen. He asks me if I will do temporary labouring and I says yes. Great, he says, I'll go and get the file. He comes back five minutes later. Sorry, we haven't got anything. Really? That's a surprise. I'll just sign on as usual then shall I?
I did do some moonlighting but it was patchy at best because there were so many people unemployed then. It was running at 35% round here. 'Maggie's millions'. Good times though, I remember them fondly.

This is a great thread. So much of what I’m reading rings true.
I was skint to age 37. I was at Uni late in life (age 27-36) and we never had any money. Once you’ve spent time skint, the feeling never leaves you.
Before that I had a few jobs.
First I worked on the Community Programme, converting an old railway line into a walkway. Driving diggers and rollers, putting up fencing and gates, planting saplings, digging steps into the hillsides and using half rounds and stakes to make them.
Then I worked in a clothes shop, Richer Sounds and then a local hifi dealer.
After that, I worked in a dole office in Blaydon. Unemployment was out of control. I enjoyed that initially, but it wasn’t as fun as my outdoor job or my hifi playtime, so I went to college and then uni.

I tried to get on the community programme doing work in parks and gardens and they had no vacancies! No vacancies for unpaid volunteer work! That's how bad it was. The good bit was everyone I knew was in the same boat, so plenty of people to hang out with, listen to music, generally have a good time even on no money. Lived on baked potatoes and cheese on toast, brewed my own beer. Go to gigs, smoke loads of weed, it wasn't actually a bad life. In a way I'm glad did that rather than look back and think I'd spent my whole adult life pushing paper round a desk. Like that Godfather's album, 'Birth, School, Work, Death.'

Being “owned” by an employer is poison to me. I’m done working again by Friday. You couldn’t pay me enough to put up with that feeling. Not everyone will feel the same, but I doubt I will ever work for an employer again. I feel like I’ve aged a generation in 8 months. Now looking forward to freedom again.

Dad used to get a generous tax free pension for getting badly wounded in the war & worked till he got made redundant from the docks at 55, Mum had a variety of part time jobs in the print & as a cleaner so they lived a reasonably comfortable life. Although I'm an only child I don't consider they spoilt me but they were a bit over protective. I left school on the Friday & started at Natwest on the Monday, jobs were plentiful (this was 1975) and I plumped for the most local one. After 4 years there I got a job on the council & worked there till I retired 5 years ago. Guess I've been lucky?

It's freedom vs money isn't it? I'd like to pack it in but realistically it isn't going to happen. There's redundancies coming up but they'll be spread over half the world so odds are they won't offer it to me. I'll take it like a shot if they do. Then just do a bit of contracting as and when I feel like it. Sign on the rest of the time. I really don't want to do another 16 years.
