Being at the flat earth coal face at the time, I can't always agree about some things, as not all of us were blinkered idiots (you may think I was, but I'd be offended). SOME Isobarik systems could sound incredibly good and I remember with huge affection how well my pal's active set (bolt-up 250's) sounded in his flat in London's Kingsbury (wood panelled walls and a not-square shape). I played a couple of old Siouxsie albums this last week which left a huge impression at the time and the bloody Spendor wrecks didn't come close I was almost in tears of frustration and the Harbeths in current form would have boomed and smothered the rest... Jimmy's 'briks were pretty good too in his odd room. Both these were original chipboard actives and not the fancier but less involving later models with external crossovers in the stands if passive. JBL had a major sea change in crossover engineering in the mid 80's I gather and although you'd never get the creamy tones of a Harbeth or similar, the sound wouldn't be screamed out of the box either these days as say, a larger Klipsch might. I really need a 'classic monitor' here again. Something that's assertive and holds attention, without sounding wrong or forensic with it - something I'd again need to demonstrate what the words mean. I suspect the newer JBL Synthesis models would do rather well - www.jblsynthesis.com/productdetail/id_4429.htmlThese around five grand... OH HELL - The L100 is being re-launched!!!!!! I wonder if it'll sound like the originals (lock up your daughters if it does as they used to turn grown men into animals!!!) or just look like them but with modern drivers and crossovers to take the worst excesses out of them... www.jblsynthesis.com/productdetail/l100-classic.htmlLate Isobarik with bolt down 250#s would be right up my street.

Things have moved on now. I have fond memories of one or two systems I knew well, but the room played a huge part and the midrange on all of them dependson the particular batch of mid drivers Linn used - the KEF disasters usually came in batches...

I have heard a few big Tannoys in my time and I can’t understand how they have made a comeback. They sound terrible to me and always have. So shouty and nothing like real people playing. They are like a ghetto blaster from the land of the giants! Some can sound 'challenging', but I don't think anybody would say that about mine.

Must have heard your Tannoy's at least 10 times in the past. Not really to my taste. But certainly not challenging sounding. S.

Quite enjoyed watching this review last night - S. Good find, Shane. I hadn’t heard of it, but it’s only £1700 and that’s a lot of amp fro the money IMO love the looks and build too, an enjoyable and informative review with good points. Variable preamp out is also a good suggestion. jordanacoustics.co.uk/products/amplifiers/box/

I mentioned Carver The Amazing Loudspeakers because a pair popped up on EBay.
I found this video of them.

It’s a good advert for Hafler! I can see where he’s coming from with different sounding amps. It can be addictive.

This guy is really funny too. This is his third video on fake Accuphase amps from China, where he discovers that may not be quite as good as the real thing!

Mr S's videos are still hard to beat, equalled only by Kendrick Sound's:

Perhaps it should be obligatory to show a name (not a Naim ). It would avoid a lot of confusion. And yes, I really don't like Rega arms. There so many better sounding options.

Have to agree with Rudi's post, it's the cable and maybe the counterweight/end stub that let it down. My 250 was upgraded by AO, and although I have thought about changing it still works fine with my Lyra Helikon and it was previously on an Ekos mk1

Sakuma-San. He makes his own tube amplification. There's more (older) videos of him. Bare in mind only spoken in Japanese.

Quite charming. His world is somehow very comforting. Having valves around is a pleasure that you just can’t get from solid state. I don’t pretend to understand it but it’s there nonetheless.

This amp is now on my shopping list. This isn’t the best sounding video of it but I like the fact it features Kralk Audio speakers.

I find it ironic people watching videos of high end audio kit, recorded on cheap as chips phone microphones, compressed for uploading to Youtube and played back (most likely) on a laptop.....
