I really didn't know what the price should be.

Class A battleship product from the former Yugoslavia. They do a matching valve pre and both look superbly built.

Not a very good marriage of dynamic driver and ribbon, in the review I read. The bass/mid driver sounded slow lacking the speed and responsiveness of the ribbon.

You see, this is a classic case of subjective opinion. My Analogue works turntable was built as a bit of a notts clone. It was said to sound indistinguishable from a Dais. I found it a bit bland. So for me the only thing that sort of sound seems to kill is my enthusiasm for listening, To others t may be the best thing since sliced bread, but that’s just the way hifi is.

I only posted the link for the 'blingy turntable Dave because of it's looks, not because of its sound quality. The arm is a different matter.

The Notts decks were a bit like a Rega RB arm (bear with me please ). IF the cartridge was a bit of a dullard, as many almost Top End models used to be (Karma, troika, some Koetsu's...), the deck would show that up. Other cartridges that could sound a bit OTT in other decks (many AT MC's of old, Decca's, which the graphite top platter was designed around and some livelier Dynavectors for example), in my book sounded just great on a Notts deck. I tried to have a proper reference rather than just a sound I thought I liked and the rest of the system did seem to respond to it then (ARC SP14, Tube Tech mono's and near-field ES14's initially). Maybe I like a livelier sound from vinyl to some of you chaps? I can see comments on people with lively rooms and speakers where they need to tone down the sources, where bods like me with dead rooms and more ripe-toned speakers (warm and natural - eff off!!!) may need digital and sharper toned vinyl...

I love the appearance of the Notts decks. They're plain ugly just like me S.

Lively wasn’t a word I’d use to,describe my Analogue Works. I did use a few arms too. Rega RB250 (modded and unmodded), Origin Live Silver, Mayware Formula IV and Helius Orion. Carts were numerous too. AT32, AT33, ATOC9, Rega Carbon, Sonus Blue Gold, Denon DL-103 and DL-103R,
Sonically it was a good deck, but it just didn’t get the blood flowing for me with any combo. Enjoyable in the short term though.
I’ve never ran a bling/pretty deck unless you include Pinks. I don’t like the looks, so they aren’t really pretty to me. Sonically they are not my thing. My Orbe would probably have counted but I ever used it. My latest deck is a complete unknown but it sure is pretty. It’s performance will hang on what motor/PSU I get for it.

I love the appearance of the Notts decks. They're plain ugly just like me S. I really hate them. The proportions are about as unflattering as you can get, they look like they have been built as a Frankenstein deck from other parts. The paint finish is always shoddy too. I could so better with a spray can. Fake marble is hideous on those I’ve seen with it too. Then here are the rubber bands. Oh, and I don’t like motors that can’t spin a platter without a helping hand.

Haha I really wonder what I’d do if I had one and it sounded better than anything else to me? I’d probably learn to love it, but I’m glad I don’t have to.

How best to minimise wow and flutter? have a seriously heavy platter and just enough torque to keep it rotating, so motor vibration doesn't get through. Linn do exactly the same with the Lingo and descended drives. rega do the opposite, a double belt on the Planar 8 to bring the platter to speed almost as rapidly as a quartz-locked techie - and all the motor Sh#t is there in the background if you're unlucky - UGH!!!
Almost ALL my gear is ugly as hell, so a Notts deck would still fit right in. It's the quality of reproduction though, isn't it? I wouldn't exactly call a Roksan Xerxes 'pretty' either with respect... It's just a brown box with anomimous cover and admittedly, when new, a superbly polished ally platter you can barely tell is rotating. Notts got started before many of the current oil rig types, but I knew Tom (lovely man R.I.P.) and how dedicated he was to getting the best out of those shitty plastic grooves he could.

I actually love the Xerxes looks. That platter is a work of art and the deck has beautiful proportions. I always liked the Voyd and NVA Senior for their longer proportions too. None as pretty as TransRotor though

I bagged a Sony CDP-S1 for £36. Is that a bargain ?

About right for a sleeper stack-system player. Only real snag to me is lack of remote without the amp or preamp to send it instructions. Will be interesting to see if you like it in stock form. Hopefully it won't 'sound' crap to you.

Don't you already have a Naim that you pulled half the components out of?
Not that I can talk when it comes to pointlessly accumulating cd players.

I bagged a Sony CDP-S1 for £36. Is that a bargain ? I’ve seen them fetch £100 plus so I’d say it is a bargain. You’d probably pay more for an Arcam Alpha 5, but in stock form they aren’t good. You’d likely get much more from it, but LesW doesn’t think it’s as good as a baby Naim when tweaked so you’re probs better off with the Sony.

The Naim is highly modified and sounds bloody good to me. The sony just came on my email as a saved search at a £25 start price and you did not have to buy the rest of the system it usually comes with. Recommended by RD. Lets see if it is as good as some say.
