I'm always a bit suspicious of speakers with covered tweeters.

Yeah... Obviously (Obviously) they've got something to hide...
I used to think the same way about women with beards. Like to think I'm more enlightened these days...

Even though I'm not that keen on panels I'd snap them up if I was near Colchester. I mean it is pocket change for what were pretty expensive speakers. They'd be about six grand if made now.

Two great finds there Westie, you really must have too much time on your hands. I wish! There was also an Audio Research D240 mk2 for sale but I bid on that so I said nothing Went for only £420 but it was a 700 mile round trip for me to collect so £400 was my limit.

Bit funny that the product details are for a Musical Fidelity product. A cock up!

Not really looking for speakers Westie, although £200 is not too much to try them. Don't know enough about Celestions as to whether or not they are expensive.

Not heard them but would like a go on them. They were expensive when they came out. Drawbacks are supposed to be narrow sweet spot and poor mid-top integration.

My father had the floor stander version. He never liked them, found the highs a bit too bright sounding. But that is going back 30 years ago now. S.

Other than some Celestion 3s which I bought new for a bedroom system, I have no experience of Celestion. At one time I would’ve liked to hear them but I’ve found what I like now, so no need.

Had a couple of pairs of Ditton 44's, didn't think much of them. Also had UL10's, loads of Ditton 15's and a couple of sets of Ditton 120's which were fun, but the best were the SL600 Si model. Wouldn't buy any Celestions again.

I've had the 44 too. I got the impression that there is a very good speaker in there, trying to get out, and failing. Good for the price they go for though.
The 'A' series are all good speakers.

The best thing about the Ditton 44 is the treble. The HF2000 tweeter is one of the smoothest and sweetest sounding units. I still have a pair. The mid on the 44 is lacking in resolution, I suspect the transient response is not great. The bass is slow and leaden, bass transients go 'bomp' rather than 'blam'.

Agreed, although I wonder what better amplification would do to help in the bass. I didn't have mine long enough to experiment in that respect. When you can buy much better speakers for not a lot more money I suppose there is little point in bothering.
I'd say the 66 is much better in every respect although a decent set is now around a grand which is way too much for what you are getting.

The KEF Concerto was a direct competitor to the 44 and outclassed it completely. It was superior in every important area. I still fancy a pair.

No bids at that nutty price and just over an hour to go. Good as they are I'd say £300 is top money for a fully working one.
