I quite fancy those myself! But that rear port wouldn't work for my location (back to the wall). Absolutely fine for Dwain's room though. Hopefully he sees your alert, he's been a bit quiet lately.

Had a great few hours over at bencats the other day I just sat and listened a lot 🤣🤣!!! those quads of his are so detailed!!! very different to the way my little set up sounds I heard a lot of great music I was unfamiliar with too it was all very enjoyable and i came away a lot more enlightened and a lot less worried about the sound of my own set up so for the moment my plan is to invest in a cheap sub for now so I can get the bass sounding how I like it as I love tight n loud bass!! then look at speakers later been looking at the wharfdale sw150 as it's cheap at £149

Just had some good news about my NVA Power amp which was being looked at for a hum issue which has now been identified and will be fixed soon . While the case is open I am getting it upgraded to S300 spec and I am told this will make it sound quite a bit better than the current S150 sec it is at . We will see but as ever hoping that an uplift in musical enjoyment is on the way .

I've been busy in the den too!! I've made some acoustic panels out of some pallet wood and some old curtains and burlap cloth filled with 100mm rockwool I've also added some hexagon tiles to the roof apex

Industrious and lower cost than pricey panels. I must say, I have seen a real uptake in passive room treatment recently and it's great to see. This stuff really makes a difference.

I've made some acoustic panels out of some pallet wood and some old curtains and burlap cloth filled with 100mm rockwool I've also added some hexagon tiles to the roof apex Brilliant stuff, I can literally see how much better that is likely to sound. I used to have a similar loft listening area a few years ago and putting treatment in was like going from low fi to high end speakers in an instant. Unless a listening room happens to be a balance of absorbent and diffusive material (quite unlikely but does happen with everyday objects occasionally, plants, pictures, furniture etc), I find it hard to listen comparing it to any (even rudimentarily) treated room. There's a gulf in SQ, nearly always....

Definitely sounds better 😁 bass is less boomy and the mids are less shouty I just need to knock up some more panels for the rear of the speakers and fit some more hex tiles I've also made a cover out of and old quilt for the window i think the meatier stands tighten things up a bit too they weigh a ton now there filled with sand I'm going to upgrade my speakers soon too

Interestingly the first 2 panels nearest the speakers are at the first reflection points the brown ones are for the speakers opposite on the diagonal

What a great thread, thanks for sharing. I've just done the same sort of thing with my room i.e. knocking up a few panels from bits and pieces kicking around the house/garage. Looking forward to hearing more about your system and how it sounds.

Reflecting, this thread is amazing. the journey from the earliest stages of a system to what you have now. Excellent stuff

I have 6 tiles left 3 per side not sure were to put them carry on across? or down towards the speakers? Maybe put them either side of my listening spot ?or just make a pretty pattern

@dwaindibley What a great job you've done with that room. You've certainly got the basics right, and I doubt there is any need to rush to upgrade your kit.

I would rather have a class A/B they look far better than just a black box !! it's just buying used that puts me off I've got 200 quid burning a hole in my pocket at the moment that marantz looks awesome !! What should I replace first in my current set up as I can't buy everything at once ?

I would rather have a class A/B they look far better than just a black box !! it's just cost and buying used I could stretch to £300 max for an amp it might take me a bit longer to save but it's doable that marantz looks awesome !! What should I replace first in my current set up as I can't buy everything at once ? Speakers. 100%. Spend as much as you can on quality speakers and they will give you a total system upgrade

I was thinking speakers first just worried my old A1 with it's 35 watts might struggle to get them singing as the elacs like lots of power

You can't look at it as though you need speakers to match the amplifier when the amplifier is gonna go. Buy the best quality (not cost) speakers you can and work backwards from there. It will give you a more linear approach to building a system and save you a fortune
