If you were to go for these speakers but are struggling to get to Preston: I work in Preston most days so could collect and get them to you no problem. Or you could collect from mine at Chorley at your leisure (a bit nearer to Manchester than Preston is.)

Thanks for the offer ste that's much appreciated 👍 but I'm going to stick with the elacs I've been looking at speakers for months now and I always came back to them and the Qs I love the look of the Qs in walnut but I think the elacs will provide me with the sound I'm after hopefully

These are not far from me so could check them out if anyone is interested. They would blow my roof off 😲😲😲 More surface area means less distortion! You dont have to play them mega loud, and they are a really good speaker to listen to. You can take a much bigger step with your budget than those ELACS will give you....I am literally smashing this keyboard as i type I'll say no more.

Ok so I've not got enough cash yet anyhoo but probably will towards the end of next month and I want to listen to the elacs first and have some time to think So in the meantime I'll take your advice and make a list of used speakers I can look at based on what you guys can suggest £300 max so I can seriously consider buying used those missions just look way to big for my loft my little missions are only 6.5ft apart and about 8 from each side wall and rear wall so I don't have a lot of width to play with or does that not matter to much

They are front ported, so rear wall interaction is reduced. Put your panels next to them and they will be tamed are fair bit too. I have floor standeres that are only about 6ft apart too, so believe me, i know abut trying to fit larger speakers in to smaller rooms. Knock up a couple of similar sized carboard boxes to the Missions i linked to and see how they position in the room.

It may not matter due to the shape of it. how wide is the gap between wall and wooden unit?

It's 16" and the top of the speakers are at ear height

It would be great to have a vintage amp and speakers but it's a minefield especially for a noob like me

😂
Just kidding.
I haven't heard them, so can't really recommend them.
B&W speakers can be quite a difficult load for an amplifier so you need to find the impedance plots and see how tough to run they really are. I have heard a few modern day B&W and I am not mad-keen on them.
I'd recommended the Missions due to them having those translucent mid drivers. They were excellent drivers IMO and I loved my pair with them in.
£300 isn't a lot of money in the realm of HiFi purchases, but you can find some gems. Those Ruarks I pointed out would have been good too, but they have gone.

I know 300 ain't a lot for hifi but it is for me!!! So they would have to be a no brainer like the missions there's a thread on the wam on speakers you have owned and the missions come up a lot so they must be pretty good !!! I'll keep a look out I might just find that gem

So they would have to be a no brainer like the missions there's a thread on the wam on speakers you have owned and the missions come up a lot so they must be pretty good !!! I'll keep a look out I might just find that gem The Missions look really nice, the drivers remind me of some I had on a pair of Rogers LS55's . . . not bad actually. If you're not buying them now (budget/time restraints etc) it's difficult to give a good recommendation of anything other than new speakers, as obviously things can change quickly. But new ones at this price point are only likely to give you a very small increase in performance given your budget. It's a difficult concept to swallow sometimes but as the long-term associates here will all agree, if you want a leap in sound quality from where you are now, good quality used speakers are the way to go. Oli (and others) have had more speakers than most of us have blades of grass on our lawns . . . . they aren't frivolous recommendations without foundation at all. Of course the decision is absolutely yours alone but if you're not getting them right now, I would save a bit more and continue to see what comes up. As others have mentioned also the speakers (most important part of the system) should dictate the amplifier, so find a pair you really like and then superior recommendations for the rest of your kit will be more forthcoming. It can be a complicated process but should be fun at the same time, you're getting your room really sorted so I think it would be worth going about the rest of it the right way too, ie, going for maximum bang-for-buck. That's something brand new prices just can't offer at this level in my (and most others) opinion. That said, do what you want to do of course and we'll all be here to give advice/constructive criticism if you want/need it! Keep us posted!

I'll keep a look out I might just find that gem I'm not knocking your budget at all. Times are hard and putting a budget together for a hobby is not easy, especially with gas and electric prices removing the little free income most of us get, but I just want to make sure you are maximizing the return for what you can spend. Those Elacs probably have £4 of parts in them (dramatic exaggeration) but the used market usually gives a much higher margin of performance per pound. optical is quite right....I've had and heard a lot of speakers, and not all of them were successful relationships lol. Some were, and the Missions were a really good listen for very little outlay. There will be others that are as good. Others like the little Mission 780se are great vfm, but they were not as good IMO and cost about the same in the used market. The issue is choice....there is loads of it.

They are front ported and a very small floorstander - not very deep and OK close to wall. I used them close to wall and have two friends who have/do use them near the wall. Well in budget, decent bass and shouldn't overdrive your room.

Superb speakers, loved the 752 Freedoms to bits, the Aerogel mid bass driver is a peach, and the soft/silk dome tweeter is lovely too, very well balanced, detailed, non fatiguing, great imaging - an absolute billy bargain. Opened my eyes to hifi, along with the Ortofon 2M black mm cartridge. OP may find them a bit big ? If not, a billy bargain as I say.

There's an absolute pair of stunners in Brighton (although delivery is available) . . . . also a couple of slightly 'rougher' looking pairs about. Fit the budget and a hell of a speaker for the money. great suggestion Jason. I've not seen them in that maple(ish) finish, lovely.

Yes, they did two premier finishes on them, which retailed for more, over the standard Black, circa 1997 - retail price £578 black; £648 rosewood/oak. That lovely finish one you mention is the Oak - very nice. (I always had the black which fitted my kit)
