Early regas were deliberately set up to play LP's faster than 33.3RPM, so they never sounded right to me. Cheap Proj-ect TTs are good value for entry level if you want a rubber band TT. Technics 1200, 1210, 1700, 1800 are great for the money and would be my recommendation.

However, being belt driven, wow and flutter was never great. Direct drive has massively improved the speed accuracy and stability of my playback.

There's a Dual CS505/1 from a mate local to me for £75 but no cart. Easy enough to get it up to Jeff's neck of the woods as Jack upstairs is doing a Mavrick taxi 13-14/4 and will stop over near Leeds. It is advertised in Maverick classifieds.

'I'd like to get addicted to heroin, where should I start?' Not had a look at turntables for a long time but seems they have got really expensive. I've given away some budget direct drives that now seem to be £250 plus on ebay - I was paying less than a hundred. This JVC isn't bad for the money www.ebay.co.uk/itm/145687400515?At the bottom end of the market avoid belt drive like Project, Rega, Dual - they are pretty terrible compared to a Japanese direct drive both in performance and build quality. But a lot cheaper and easier to make. Don't forget you will need to get the cartridge set up properly to have any chance of a good sound, regardless of the deck. If you don't know how to do that it's a steep learning curve. I've heard dealer demos where the cartridge wasn't properly set up - last time was a Linn demo! But my real advice is 'Don't do it!' It's a bottomless money pit, a cocaine habit is cheaper.

Never understood that, cling-filming your LPs. I mean buy proper transparent sleeves, or just leave them alone. It looks so tacky.

Take Macca's comment seriously when thinking about getting into vinyl, I sold all mine and the turntable, the best thing I've done, especially at my age. I've improved my system and been on holiday so all the profit has now been spent, you can't take it with you.
Forget vinyl, keep saving and improve the system you already have.

It is like hard drugs really isn't it?
People think they can handle it 'I'll just get a budget deck and a dozen LPs, only a bit of fun.'
Next thing they're on eBay buying Koetsu from Japan on their credit cards, and selling their car to get an SME V.

Great turntable for the money. Love mine in ‘office’ system! Tell me more !! You would need to contact Jack (Non Smoking Man on Wam/Maverick via PM to organise details) he does taxi runs regularly between here Liverpool, Manchester & Sowerby Bridge. He is coming back via Liverpool & Bolton on Sunday the 14th so could bring up with him and then meet up with you enroute, would probably cost you a tenner fuel donation. The seller is chrisph on Mavericks & Wam (a good friend who lives about 12 miles away) so easy to get tt here for delivery to you.

Bit overpriced and no better than the £75 Dual to my mind. If you go for the Dual if you sent me the ££s I could grab an Ortofon OM5 or 10 cart or possibly an Audio Technica AT VM95E, and fit it for you prior to delivery.

Each to their own when it comes to digital and vinyl. Been using vinyl for 50 years and digital since it became 'popular'!
For me they both have their place and looking at what some people spend on digital and vinyl, I don't see a difference with the 'habit'
You can spend silly money on both if you want to achieve something that you are after.
Me, I enjoy listening to music with a sound I can appreciate and my current setup in my room manages to achieve that for me. Always preferred to use physical records but enjoy using tape, CD and digital files when applicable.
If you want to delve into using records then go for it. Some nice turntables available for reasonable money and I agree that new records can be very expensive compared to the other versions but shop around (which can be fun in itself) as bargains can be found.

The Dual is a great sounding TT. It can need servicing to make sure speed change works well and it starts and stops as the arm is moved. I have an OM 10 and it works great as a cartridge.
I agree you could spend big money on vinyl, but take it steady and just buy as you want. Second hand is not as cheap as it was but plenty of charity shops will sell at bargain prices. I picked up a Kraftwerk first press of Trans Europe Express a few weeks ago go 50p, looks hardly played. Also an Au Pairs live album for £1. Looking for records is part of the fun for me.
Secret is buying what you find rather than wanting an album, looking for it and paying the full price.
Have fun
