Oh fook. What is the issue? Maybe you should have bought a Neurochrome 686 Maybe I should just get a pen and a pad of paper and write down where I went wrong right from the beginning.

I think I will do nothing for the time being.
It's weird that all amps I try - even the Neurochrome - lack that crispness. If it is the speakers at fault then I'm wasting my time trying other amplifiers. And I don't want to get new speakers right now as I'm supposed to have those Tannoy Ardens coming at some point.
I have some Beovox MC1202 lying about, think I will hook them up with various amplifiers too and see what's what, see if the same thing persists.

Ah, right, those Tannoise. You're still getting them? In that case it's well worth waiting for those before you try and optimise amplification imo. Quite a different sound to your Focals.

Hang on, was it Alans 286 with dual SMPS? It's not the same animal as my 696, especially with the new Beefy PSU...just for info.

Bloody hell Martin, that's not what I wanted to read. If you'd have stopped another half hour or so you would have heard it. Any idea what it might be?

You've tried a Neurochrome? yes, Alan brought his one down, and his pre. We tried various combinations of pre-power.

Starts off as an intermittent 'rustling' noise in the right channel. originally very faint so you wonder if you actually even heard it. Then gets more noticeable and more frequent until finally the channel cuts out altogether.

Wanted to try both runs of Chord Odyssey 2 to the speakers so I could get rid of the jumpers from the equation. But only have 1 power amp it is easy to bi-wire with - Linn LK100 as it has 4 pairs of banana plug sockets on the back. So in it goes on top of the stack. It doesn't get on with the DCB1 pre-amp (earth loop) so I'm running it straight from the DAC. Result? Meh. Whatever the problem is it's not the jumpers. Bored now, so for thrills I hooked up the Sansui equalizer again and dialled in a +2b shelf from 2khz up. Hmm -loads better, if occasionally a bit shouty. Dropped the 1Khz by 2db and that did the trick. Best sound I've had in ages. Crisp, fabulous separation. Top end still isn't quite 100% right but is now a lot closer, maybe 95%. I'm so impressed I've just bought a Klark Teknik DN332 unit www.klarkteknik.com/product.html?modelCode=P0BPR to replace the old Sansui. Should arrive this week. host an image free

Only in an old-school analogue way.
It's quite shocking the difference it makes. I can pretty much get this Linn sounding like the system does with the DCB1/Krell KSA50S. It's really not far off it.
Dropping the 1Khz by 1dB especially is an amazing improvement. Everything sharpens up and separates out, and vocals sound like you are listening to the mic feed they are that clear, but don't dominate the soundstage. I hate that when the vocal is obscuring the rest of the mix instead of being balanced within it.

I think it is a case of "if you need to ask the price...."
I don't see how many people could fit these in a normal house.

The speakers are in France... Fair enough. Have a look around youtube and you'll see kenrick restoring numerous pairs of said speakers.

These are the JBL I would have. They had them at the Cranage show a few years ago now and they embarrassed every other speaker there, even the ones that were four or more times the price. If the Tannoy Ardens don't work out for me I might bite the bullet and go for them. Seamless sound and completely effortless delivery at any volume:

I know.
I'd have to sell a lot of my good equipment to soften the financial blow a bit. But they are amazing value in the context of the world of high-end speakers.

End of the month - although the new lockdown will probably delay things again. What can you do?
