Can't even legally go and get the Krell back off of Alan. Although might take a chance if James isn't going to borrow it first

Lock down sucks. I was just getting ready to sell my speakers, but nobody can come and get them...

Well not officially. Can't see that it can do any harm unless you breathe all over each other during the handover. Rules are for the obedience of idiots and the guidance of wise men.

Oppo - Soncoz - Krell - JM Labs: gif hostingStill a little bit of splash on cymbals but otherwise this is spot-on. Need to do a complete re-build and re-dress the cables, otherwise will do for now.

Yep it is dark here today. Cloud cover like on Venus.
Almost time to see what's on in the 'Movie For A Dreary Afternoon' slot.

Seeing as it looks very unlikely that I'll be getting the NS1000M off of Ollie I've decided instead to blow some of that budget on an Audiolab 6000CDT. www.audiolab.co.uk/6000cdt/In black ofc. Should arrive tomorrow. I'm a bit sceptcial that transports make a difference but according to Paul Rigby it's night and day: It’s different. Completely different. “Hey, have you just put on a different CD?”-different. That’s how different. The leap in quality was quite shocking, actually. Imagine you’ve drawn a picture of your living room on a piece of paper. It’s a sort of comic-strip effect drawing with everything you know in the room, on that paper. It’s a familiar sight but, as I say, it’s on paper. That’s the reference CD player reference (which I hasted to add was three times the price of the 6000CDT). Then walk into the real 3D, living (and breathing) room. Walk around in it. Look side on and behind. Jump up and down in it. That’s the 6000CDT.That’s how different.theaudiophileman.com/6000cdt-cd-transport-from-audiolab/

lol - Don't worry, I still have funds available to take them off your hands if it ever comes to it although I don't think for a second that it will.
In other news I still can't get the bloody Black Tulip pre-amp to output anything on the left channel. It works at Alan's place so exactly what is the problem here? It isn't the balance control. Just totally baffling. It isn't the power amp as that is fine when using the DAC as a pre-amp.

Are you sure you have the balance control in the centre?

Are you sure you have the balance control in the centre? Yes, absolutely no question about it.

I tried all the options when I first got it. 3 different sets of cables. It's not the cables. I tried it with different power amps - the same. Tried using different inputs - the same.
But it works fine at Alan's. And at Ian's who I got it off.
It just makes no sense.

Just wondering as they are Philips made RCA sockets whether the centre pin on your plugs is long enough to make contact. Perhaps one channel has an inner socket that is further back.

it's the same on all sets of interconnects I tried. The same channel each time.
Plus I swapped left for right and same channel stays dead with the exact same interconnects.
There must be a reason and it is probably something weird like that, but I don't think that's it.
I'll have another bash at it tomorrow when I'm fresh. Go through every permutation again.

Photo a bit blurry but the Audiolab transport arrived. Amazon couldn't find a bigger box I guess. Not got much time on it yet but is noticeably better than the Oppo it replaces. Bit crisper, a bit more defined.

In fairness Paul Rigby is not that over the top in that review. At least not by reviewer standards, I'm a few albums in and seems at least some of that coloration I was blaming on the Krell KSA100 is gone. Can hear the studio acoustic occasionally now.

F#ck alone knows.
I'll wildly speculate that is something to do with the bit between the actual read of the pits and lands on the disc and the bit that sends out the electrical current - or the light in this case as I'm using TOSlink.
Or its power supplies. Everything's always power supplies.
I do wonder if blind and level matched I'd be able to distinguish it from the Panasonic DVD player. I mean I'd like to think so but I have to live with the possibility I couldn't.

Audiolab house sound often tends to leanness, that can emphasise some sound characteristics. It may not be neutral but it can be impressive in its way. And of course it all depends on how it synergies with the rest of your gear.

I think I was one of the few who liked the 8000A.
I do prefer a crisp, architectural sound to that warmer sort of 'analogue' sound. Of course you can go too far with it.
