I want my perfect sound back! You know that does not exist Up till I got the Krell 50S/DCB1/Spotfire/JM Labs combo together I would have agreed with you. But I'm not kidding - that sound was exactly the sound I have always been chasing since I was a teenager. So almost inevitable that one component of it would go tits up after a month or so of bliss.
With the Krell 100 in play it isn't quite the same. Still very good but not quite 100% to my taste like it was with the 50S.

I'll get it sorted....I don't care how many people I have to kill to do it. I want my perfect sound back! I wouldn't worry too much, I'm going to ruin your day when I bring the 686 over lmao. Don't worry though, I'll build you one once you've heard it 😂 I do fancy a go on that, when are you bringing it? I'm around all day Monday....

How much are they as a kit? Theres a few options. He has a 286 that's literally just a fit in the case it's provided in job. I'll have a look at his site and see what the cost was

From what I can see, the 686 can't be built for much less than I paid for mine.
I have SMPS in mine and I suspect that's cheaper than a Toroid but unless I really costed it, I can't be sure.
Personally, I think the website could do with a Kit offer. All parts supplied except case.

Fellas, he does cheaper amps as well and if the baby chip-amp kits he does are as good sounding as they measure, you could be on to a bargain and I'm sure if you wanted a beefed up version, he could advise on transformer VA sizes and so on, plus maybe a twin-supply version if necessary.

It's a lot of money though, to be spending on a brand new item. I don't mind buying used as someone else takes the hit with the VAT etc and if I have to cash in I can shift it on at not much loss. Buying new I take a big hit if I have to sell.
Just going to go out and get the beer in and then I'll have another mess about with this Krell.

I hope you're not palming Macca off with some inferior version of amp. Are there any sq differences between the 286 and your 686?

When you hear Oli's amp and you feel it's better than your Krell, yes I know you like to have in your system for a couple of months to try it out, but you know what I mean. I don't know why you worry about £2000, (nearly said piffling £2000) the longer you keep the amp the less of a hit in real terms. Life's too short to worry about that £500 VAT ect. if you can afford it, and the amps for you.

Look at the specs, the THD of the 86 module is lower than the 686, just has less watts. Also, the 86 could be bridged to give even more power if necessary. Either way, they should be as good as this one.

I think would be an IF lol There are a couple of things to consider TBH. 1) You'll never get back anything like the cost of the amplifier if you want to sell it 2) Cost. They are not cheap. Looking at £341 in VAT! 3) You will have to either build it yourself or find someone who'll do it for you. 4) If on me of the tiny SMD bits breaks, it could be catastrophic as they are nearly impossible to repair. At least atm there is still the option of replacing one module Big move to get one of these

Personally, I’d avoid it like the plague. I’d imagine terrible resale value, almost unknown so a very tough sell too. Unless you plan on keeping for the rest of your life, you’re onto a loser. Then if anything goes wrong, is it an easy fix? You couldn’t easily send it back. Also the company isn’t long established.
Everyone is different though. Some people value the use they get. I never put money into anything unless I am likely to get more back when I sell. I’ve been that way all my life.

Tried a different mains cable in case it was just the fuse in the plug but no joy.
Something internal must have come loose in transit, or an internal fuse has blown.
Back to the KSA100 then.

Got the locks on the new door sorted out. Turns out there was nowt wrong with it, it was just me being a dick. So that's a plus. Even better it cuts down the noise from outside massively. Even though I already had double glazing. Can't hear cars go past hardly at all now. Quieter listening environment!

Sure, financially you may do but what's the point? If everyone went with the safe option, financially, we'd all have LP12s and Harbeth speakers, what a dull place this would be lol. What I have found to often be more rewarding, is unearthing the Gems. The little known bits of kit that truly spank the big ticket items. The DCB1 kicked that off and it's still here, although that may fetch its cost price if I sold it. The whole setup now is a little off the beaten path apart from the SP10 but even that isn't standard. I don't buy items for menetary returns, I buy them for exploration and experience.

No I'll leave it, Even if I spotted something I wouldn't attempt to fix it myself.
I'm being churlish really, the KSA100 does sound superb. Got a bit of Donald Fagen on now and it's mint. I just prefer the slightly more 'etched' quality of the 50S. I'd probably be in the minority with that though. I've noticed over the years that lot of people don't like that overtly 'hi-fi' sound.

On a different subject it was getting pretty dark so closed the curtains on the front window. (The back window curtains are always closed).
It's a fair size window but it is about twenty feet from the speakers, although they do fire directly at it. But closing the curtains gives a massive increase in sound quality. I mean not subtle at all. Much more balanced and you can hear the acoustic in the recording all of a sudden. Little details are now obvious.
I've noticed this before many times but I always forget about it completely. Makes me think these blokes who invest loads in room treatments are on to something.

I can't think that there is much in the way of user suitable parts in the box but thought at least it would enlighten us. Not worry. I'll come and see you when I can, I'll bring the 686 and if you want, I'll drop the 50 off at Alan's. Get him On It. Room treatment is where that last 20% of your sound quality is hidden. The Townsend bar things showed me that.

You need to get into that garage, get a concrete floor going on. Suspended floors are a nightmare. When I bought my house a concrete floor was a deal-breaker. I checked it on the viewing. I rented loads of house before hand so I'd got no doubts.
You need to damp down the concrete though, forget that laminate stuff. Thick underlay and thick carpet and rugs on top. All can be had dirt cheap. Then you don't need those Townsend things or a wall shelf for the TT for that matter.

Actually Oli, if you've been where I have over the decades, I think you may find that the room is the 80%, because if your room is well set up, ANY stereo will sound pretty amazing. I had this demonstrated to me many years back, where a pair of HB1'sssssssss sounded absolutely wonderful and various other far more expensive and 'better elsewhere' speakers just sounded bigger and equally delightful, rather than a transformation.
I've heard two of my pairs of speakers sound totally different depending on the room. Here, the mid bass dominates but a larger room with different bass modes, the sound opens out incredibly. I don't know enough about acoustics, but apparently most rooms misbehave badly under around 200Hz and this is why some makers recommend getting the speakers at least a couple of feet away from a rear wall. Those wealthy single enthusiasts who post pics all over Facebook can afford to place their HiFi Shrine at one end of the room with the speakers set well in front and of course, a single listening chair to enjoy it all from.
Anyway, enough for the night. I hope the 50S is easy to fix. There's a little circuit board attached to the mains socket, with slider switch (set towards the transformer) and a mini power supply attached. There are several ribbons around, all of which plug in. I suspect these deal with the plateau bias arrangement and the sub board at the front that deals with it and a few of them attach to this sub board with a non-signal circuit at the front of the amp with said bias lights attached. It's a damned complex amp really, but the signal path doesn't follow the ribbons at all.

Of course you can make advances. Someone could pick up a 686 down the line as a used item. They would make the same advance as the person who buys it new if it’s their thing. In fact I’d argue you’re more likely to make advances buying used bargains because you get to hear so much more kit. If you have something that you know you’re going to lose your shirt on if you sell, you’re kinda wedded to keeping it and even convincing yourself it should stay. Don’t get me wrong, I admire your bravery. It’s just not something I’d ever do. Not just for the financial aspects, I’d not want anything involving kits, DIY or prototype stuff. It just doesn’t appeal to me. I had too many hair shirt bits from small manufacturers in the 80s and early 90s. These days I want a full production item from a well known maker. I also have issues taking stuff away from stock for similar reasons. I guess I’m not a modder in any way.

The best loudspeaker experience i ever heard was in a Recording studio that was basically built inside an Anechoic Chamber. Amazing what a Dead environment with absolutely no reflections can do.

It was suggested to me to make the listening area a little more dead than the speaker area as this mimics a concert hall with audience seated. odd to me but it worked in one room I visited. I do like a studio control room vibe, but the deadness can be uncomfortable sometimes, especially these days where people often live in bathroom acoustics with very little in the way of soft furnishings.

I have never thought about re-sale values until my most recent purchase, the Techie DD and Rega arm. I have always purchased gear that I WANT TO KEEP and enjoy. How can you really enjoy your system and listening to music when it's always at the back of your mind - what am I going to change next?

For me it is peace of mind, should I one day need the cash I can sell for roughly what I paid. If I'd bought it new I'll take a big hit when I do that.
I don't go around looking for kit to buy but if something comes up on the used market that interests me I'll give it a go as long as the price is reasonable. It may be that I have no intention of using it long term, like with the Marantz CD54 I bought just to see if it was true that the first CD players had poor sound quality (it isn't). Or My Harmon Kardon 930 which I got just because I fancied a go with a good looking old school receiver.
I think people who only buy kit when they are attempting to upgrade their system don't really get the concept of buying kit purely out of interest. They just assume it is box-swapping (although I'm really more of a box collector as I don't often sell anything) due to dissatisfaction when it has nothing to do with that. Some of us are just fascinated by the equipment itself. Completely separate pastime from just sitting down and enjoying some music.
