Guardian 686s are now in the circuit. A credit to Tom, is that you would be hard pushed to know it. I declare this build complete.... Fantastic! Well done K. Now enjoy it!

The 4U case looks very imposing in the rack. It certainly does not have much WAF about it.
Just as well it is my man cave.

I need to tidy up, after tools went all over the place, troubleshooting.

The amp has been playing faultlessly all day, and no magic smoke has escaped. I must have done it right.

No smoke always an extremely good sign, well chuffed for you. How's she sounding ? Edit: I read back a few posts and see that it is sounding great - not surprised from what I've read myself. I take my hat off you too for doing the build yourself, again - well done again Kevin !

Thanks Robbie. Doing the build myself was the only sensible option. Shipping the completed amp would not be cheap. With the latest amps, there is less work to do, as you can only buy the V1.1 boards fully populated.
Apparently, they are quieter than the "old" 686 as well, not that many people would be able to tell the difference. I can see why Oli likes his so much though.

The "noise" is reduced on the input apparently, and has led to a slight improvement in IMD as far as i can see, and according to Tom the difference "may or may not" be audible. REGARDLESS.....i will not be chasing the new PCB's as i am in no way interested in changing what i have got. The 686 is possibly the second best all time HiFi bargain...after the BB3 Just taking the P. It's the best amplifier i have owned, heard or auditioned under £10K. No exceptions. I am genuinely pleased you pulled the trigger on it, K. It will reward you over the long term and in truth, i just dont see a viable upgrade without either a large inheritance or windfall coming my way. We are in great danger of having identical systems on this forum lol

We’ll never have identical systems. My wife won’t let me spend much more on HiFi.

The differences are about 1.5db thd + noise. The difference between- 120 and -121.5db really isn't audible. That's not to say they don't add up

Thinking about things this morning, I think the fuse I fitted may be too big. It's a 6.3 amp fuse.
If I assume that my transformers are 80% efficient, then I should be able to use a fuse around 4.3 amps, or am I missing something?
I have a soft start fitted.
2 x 400VA transformers are fitted.

The 6.3A fuse was selected based on there being no ISS in the circuit. With the ISS, I believe I can lower this, using the following calculation. VA/Vmains < Ifuse < 1.5 x VA/Vmains
VA/Vmains gives me roughly 3.5A, so 1.5 x VA/Vmains gives me 5.2A, so 4A or 5A should do it. I am assuming that I can leave it alone with a 6.3A fuse in place, and it will be safe enough?

I did the extra psu board a month or two ago, that seemed to give them a bit more grip with the volume wicked right up. The only other things left to do are as follows.
1. Add a front panel led to show when they are plugged in. There's a hole for that in the panel already and there's an led on the soft start board that could be lifted to the front panel that would provide this, its on when they are plugged in already its just hidden as its not visible from outside.
2. Add a switch on the back to flip the signal input and an extra set of speaker outs so I can run each mono as either a bridged amp or a stereo pair at half power. I might do this if I go active plus dsp for the bass driver. So the mid and ribbons will each get their own 80 watt amp board supplying them.
I could vent the cases, but they don't even get mildly warm

Yeh, there's really nothing to do to them that isn't f-ckery window dressing.
I could put a 686 board in each chassis instead?

I am not impressed with the WBT RCA sockets. They do not maintain a good connection with my Aeco RCA plugs. I have ordered some Viborg to replace them with.

I've never liked the WBT, had the same problem on kit in for repair/modification.

I'll chalk that one up to experience, or rather, lack of it.

I'll chalk that one up to experience, or rather, lack of it. That's the only way to know mate, you have to try these things. The CMC are superb but I have no qualms about the quality of the Viborg. I never chose them as they are silver plated prior to the gold finish. The CMC are thick gold plated directly to the Copper. Wise to change though if you weren't happy.

No, I had it out of the rack to change the fuse down to a 5A. I was moving my legs to get comfortable, and it brushed the cooling fins. Didn't hurt, but bled impressively.
