Ok the missus was out today so I had a play with some valves in various positions to see what they would sound like. Also what combos I might prefer. Findings will be below and I will stress that this is completely at a whim with no systematic review at all or measurements of any kind lol.
Also I just played a load of different records rather than doing to review thing kf the same tracks etc over and over again. Can't be arsed with that. 🙂

1st lot
V1 Tesla pcc88 V2 Brimar ecc83 V3 Tele pcc189
Sounded ok , a bit thin and not really very involving at all a bit disappointing really. The Brimar is used ,came out of my guitar amp, so maybe not at its best, that may be a factor.
Albums, some Zep and Aretha Franklin.

2nd
V1 Tesla Pcc88 V2 EI Elite ecc83 V3 Tele pcc189
Much nicer , more tone and body to the music , the EI Elite has a nice tone to it , not forced. Not the most detailed though by the sound of it but a nice listen nonetheless.
Music, some Doors, REM and Flaming lips

3rd
V1 Tele pcc88 V2 EI Elite ecc83 V3 Tele pcc189
Put another tele in the V1 position, big jump in air and space in the music. Longer lasting notes and more detail. Very nice, sounds like the Tele pcc189 and pcc88 combo work well together. Shows of the EI valve better to. I could live with this sound quite easily.
Music, Jon Mitchell , Some Floyd

V1 Tele pcc88 V2 Tesla E83cc V3 Tele pcc189
Swapped the Elite out for the Tesla E83cc, these are supposed to be as near as you can get to the fabled Tele 803s. Frame grid construction on machines that were sold to Tesla by Telefunken after the ceased production in the early 70s.
I'm a bit sceptical sometimes of all the hypre re valves but these seem to have a universally good rep on the net. Plus I picked up a NOS one for about £50 so worth a shot I reckon.
Wow, 😲 major uplift all round in sound. Channel seperation, detail, the attack and decay in notes. Bass better defined and deeper. Massive increase in the presence and sense of the music all round.
I would definitely suggest trying one of these of you can get one at a reasonable price . Far more accessible atm than most Telefunken ecc83s.

I'm looking for one of these Andrew. It's the last valve I will try in the V2 position. Nothing has bettered my TFK ECC83...SO FAR I've been rolling today too:

I have to agree the Telefunken ECC83 has been the best in V2 position so far. I am using a Matsushita PCC88 in V1 position and a Brimar PCC189 (I think, without looking) in V3 position.

I managed to get a pair or EI pcc88s cheaply so will try them too sometime. Not heard a Tele ecc83 so can't compare to the Tesla.

Tried the EI PCC88s today with the Tesla E83CC, first impressions are that they are very nice. Clear detailed and good imaging. Closer in sound to the Teles than the tesla PCC88s. Will give them a few hours run in before a more detailed assessment. Not disappointed so far though.

They are great little valves the Ei I had an Ei ECC83 in the middle for a few days and it didn't leave me wanting. Although the valve itself cost more than the TFK i have!

Nothing has bettered my TFK ECC83...SO FAR I've been rolling today too: Oli, the 1950s Tungsram ecc83 foil getter has knocked the TFKECC83 out of the park in every amp I've tried it in over the years. I've yet to find an ECC83 that comes close to it.

I'd happily try one but I am wary of things getting too lush/Rich/Rosey. Let me know what they are like.

HI Oli
Drop me your address and I'll send you one to try. I'd simply say IME everything is improved upon- it sounds like a 'bigger' tube, with wonderful soundstage, very dynamic and hitting the mark throughout the tonal range. Obviously it'll be system dependent like all tubes, but having tried it on a variety of applications, it has come up trumps every time.

Just got some Siemens pcc88s on order, will be interesting to see how they match up against the Telefunkens and others when they get here. Xmas post might delay them a bit tho.

Ok so been playing the Siemens PCC88 for a while now and they have settled down. In terms of sound they are very detailed, crisp and clear. The channel separation is very good and I would rate them higher than the Berlin/Ulm Teles in this respect. A very neutral sound, obviously if you don't like neutral they may not be for you.
I am getting little nuances through in the recordings that I have not heard before , this is especially true through my Neurochrome headphone amp into my Hifiman headphones which are more revealing than my speakers. Very nice valves.
