The one on the right? It looks very high end 1970s but you never can tell these days. Sorry got no idea what it is. Sony?

Well done Andy 👏👏👏 Welcome to the SP10 owners club. Thanks Oli - yep been thinking about getting one for some time and after using the JVC I decided to go for it. Just need to tweak the arm board so I can setup the SME V on it properly but sounding very good so far. I have another 12 inch arm coming next week so this will be going on and once the wooden arm has been rewired will give this ago too.

Sounding good already, even thought the SME V isn't optimally setup (will look at altering the arm board this week sometime) Wish I had dipped my toe in the DD water earlier The Orbe still runs it close though (I know the tweaks made to it help) so excited to see how the 12 inch arms work with it!!

What does an orbe cost, with mods etc? Second hand (Like mine), would be around £2.5K I would think - but like most things, only worth what someone is willing to pay

I had no idea they were so chingy. Probably because I haven't looked sideways at another turntable since I got the SP10.... It must be love lol

I know you've had a sneaky look at both the Sony and the Denon DP80 though Bigman I saw the SP10 for sale, it looks gorgeous with the SME fitted now, and that lid is a bit special too, hope you enjoy your new purchase

It does look special and I can't believe how 'new' it looks - looks like it was made last week, even the boxes and documentation look like they have never been used

Didn't last long. The Denon..... interesting as I've never heard one, but looking at it I don't think it would do anything the SP10 can't do. I'm a huge SP10 fan, always have been, so it's gonna take something truly remarkable to get into my system.

Mk3 SP10 was the best motor unit in the world when it came out (about 1980?) and I don't think it has been bettered since.
Even the latest SP10R only matches its specs for wow, flutter and rumble. Effectively it's impossible to improve on it.
if I was going to get back in the vinyl game I wouldn't even think about other options. Although the SL1200 as a motor unit is more than good enough.

Adding the Tenuto Platter Matt improved the MK2 figures, IIRC. I can't remember where I read that, but it was some sort of Technics fan page.

12 inch Titanium Unipivot tonearm mounted on an arm board Just soldered to the sockets and put behind at the moment - plan is to mount them to the arm board underneath. Using the P77 cartridge with the Firebottle OTP MkII to make sure it works - it does, but a slight hum. Hoping when the leads are shortened when the sockets are underneath that the hum will calm down. A few pics:

I have put the SME-V back on the Orbe and just playing some tunes - wow, it still sounds good - did I do the right thing buying the SP-10?
Using the same arm, cart, phono, pre, power amp and speakers there is not a lot in it too be honest!!

All looks good. Interesting to hear your thoughts on the new tonearm. I've been looking around for a new 12" for a while, some interesting developments at the moment.

Using the same arm, cart, phono, pre, power amp and speakers there is not a lot in it too be honest!! What's in the system? Cartridge is a Goldring Elite (for the money a cracking cart). The phono preamp is the BB3. Preamp is a Myryad Z40 (cracking little pre and a brilliant headphone amp). The power amp duties are currently covered by a Pure Sound A30 which then feeds my Reiver Jenna floor standing speakers. When I used the SP-10 with the SME-V arm I was blown away, but just put the SME arm back on the Orbe and not too sure the the difference is as great as I thought. Love the stability of the SP-10 and what this does but the Orbe seems to work in a different way - more soul? Anyway - may keep both turntables (was going to sell the Orbe) but I won't be getting another SME-V

All looks good. Interesting to hear your thoughts on the new tonearm. I've been looking around for a new 12" for a while, some interesting developments at the moment. Jury is still out on the 12 inch arms. Technically they should work a lot better than the 9/10 inch arms and the wooden arm was a peach apart from the hum so I am hoping to rewire that one and fingers crossed it will be good. The titanium arm I just got also generates some hum but with it being a Unipivot, the cables coming out of it need to be flexible, so I just used the run he gave me to some sockets. I will put the sockets under the arm board and shorten the wire so hopefully this will get rd of the hum. I was just using a P77 MM cartridge but it did sound promising. Once I sort out the cabling etc I will put my DL103M in and see what happens.

Yes you get a better perspective on the differences when you swap back to what you used before.

I prefer 12" (no innuendo intended). I've two SME's a V5-12 and a 3012 and I just love them. Would take a lot for me to part with them.

Problem with the the arms you mention is they would struggle to fit on the current Obsidian SP-10 plinth and allow the lid to work. I don't want to change the current plinth as a. I like the looks and b. I have heard SP-10's in other plinths and have not noticed a big difference.
Let's see what father Christmas brings this year (just around the corner!!)

I didn't want to suggest spending more money, as it's a bit wanker-ish, But..... Sticking that SP10 in a Panzerholz plinth would be my first port of call. The obsidian plinth is a thing of beauty, no doubt, but to get the best from the motor id get shot of the plinth. We did that experiment with the SP10, and the Sony TTS8000. The difference in performance was not subtle. If we can find a way, I'd be happy to do an SP10 comparison so you can hear for yourself before shelling out, but for £100 and a bit of routering....I'd be on it.
