Yes that looks perfect oli, must be the image compression making moire patterns.

Looks good Oli. When I was searching for an amplifier and other stuff on these Chinese sites, there are some amazing cases for the diy'er.

Gonna have to get mine back to you after the New Year and one-box it with the newer transformer, I assume the current case is no good as a one box? No, would need a new case, new Traffo, CNC work, soft start.... But it can be done

Hi all, after reading the build story and people’s fantastic experiences with the BB3 here, I’ve joined the queue for one of these beauties!
Can’t wait to hear more!
Dan.

Looking great Remind me - what's the damage for the kit and a ready built unit? Also, what do you get in the kit? Cheers

Anyone got any measurements available for the BB3?
In particular I am interested in the following if they are available:
Equivalent Input Noise (IEN) 0.6nV weighted and unweighted
Signal to noise ratio MC Low output 2V/Bal MC Hi output 2v/Bal
Harmonic distortion 2V/Bal
Just want to compare againts another MC phono stage I am interested in?

@ jimbo No measurements are available or have been undertaken. The best acoustic transducers have been used, ears. Why are you quoting 0.6nV, it can't be weighted and unweighted? The output is not 2V or balanced so any figure would be meaningless in comparison. Also what are the Low output and high output levels? Again for distortion, just check all the extremely positive feedback for air, space and instrument placement and separation. You don't get that with high distortion figures.

I'd buy the IFI Zen phono if you are choosing on specs alone, Jim. I presume that's the one you are comparing to, as they are the only company/maker that publishes all of those specs. I think you can get them for about £150 👍

I'd be interested in some figures as well. I appreciate how something measures dosen't necessarily relate to who it sounds but I do use some of these figures to make a semi-informed decision on kit selection and quite often I get good synergy.

The IFI Zen gets great reviews and Fremer thought it compared particularly well against some mega priced stuff so at £150 it looks an absolute bargain to start listening to MC cartidges. I like the options of being able to use Hi or Lo ouput MC cartridges and indeed Very Lo.
I was just interested to see how the BB3 measured in comparison as it is so well thought of. The IFI has an extremely low noise floor (-151db) even compared against some of the best MC phono stages out there and as we know low noise is critical in MC phono stages.
But as we all know specs dont tell you everything!

But as we all know specs dont tell you everything! As i said to you recently Jim, There are multiple ways of achieving figures. It's the sacrifices you are willing to make elsewhere in the circuit that get you to those kind of numbers. There are no free lunches in HiFi, so for £150, i would expect there to be sacrifices or things that are not optimal, or it wouldnt be £150! The trouble with specs with Valve phonostages, is that with every different valve you use, you alter the spec. We used 2x pinnacle valves when we initially started to build and measure the BB3. We were convinced we had enough gain etc and everything measured well.... However, when we put Tesla valves in, we got a huge drop in gain. It's not quite that simple with valve phonostages. There are specs in this thread. Feel free to dig back and see if any are comparable. In truth though, if you REALLY want to compare them, you'll have to buy one of each and use your ears. After all, that's all that matters in the end. Anyway, I have a waiting list until September so that should give you enough time to get acquainted with the IFI

A standard (most common) set of measurements are already in the thread. Around page 2 iirc.
