this weekends job has been to drill the holes for the tonearm, ive done the bodying up with the french polish and its had a week to harden up. now the tonearm holes are done i can give it a final french polish then flatten back and compound. i paid close attention to getting the mounting distance bang on,i used a strip of ply with 2 holes drilled to 225mm centers,1 hole goes over the spindle and the other holds a pencil,an arch was drawn and after deciding where the tonearm was going to sit i drilled a 22mm hole. next i turned on the lathe a piece of round steel bar,22mm at one end and 19mm at the other(same o/d as the tonearm tube),the end was turned to leave for want of a better word a nipple with a center dot. now im ready to drill the 3 holes for the tonearm mounting collar, first i put the round bar through the mounting collar with the 22mm end sticking out the bottom, this centers the collar in the 22mm plinth hole. next i loosen the grub screw on the collar so the round bar drops down through the hole and when its at the same height as the tt spindle i re tightened the collars grub screw to lock the bar in place. then its just a case of slipping the ply strip back on the spindle and if all went well, which it did the nipple on the round bar sits in the other hole exactly 225mm away from the spindle center.to double check i measured from the spindle to the center dot on the nipple. all went well. with that all done here's a few pics of it assembled.

im spining vinyl!!!!!
at last i hear you all cry! lol a tense moment as the needle dropped, has it been worth all the hard graft?? ive not checked alignment yet and i have adjust+ coming soon to check azimuth but my initial thoughts are it seems a wee bit louder in this plinth than the sony,im using a julian bream/john williams album that i know very well and to my ears the attack (if thats the right word?) on the guitar strings is very much more prominent and forceful. the decay on some of the notes especially harmonic ones is very much improved, over all id say there is now more realism to the sound.
so to answer my own question, yes for me its been very much worth the time and effort,im chuffed to bits.the only downer is ive got to strip it back done again to give it a final polish....perhaps it can wait a week

thanks mate,no huge night and day difference but i didn't think there would be,it's all about ringing the last few drops of performance out of it,the fact that that it looks better is a bonus. the next mod is installing the phonomac bearings.

a small change to the plinth,i decided i wanted the flexibility of using different armboard material, plus i have the option to change arms if i want, not that i do.

One day, when I’m allowed out to play again, I am thinking of getting my panzerholz plinth veneered. I shall take these pics into the chap that does it and say “I want that one”. 😀
