As you know Robbie, I love big Japanese amplifiers. Had a big Sony ES integrated for a good while. Had it been a little more reliable, it would have lasted longer here but yes, problematic.

I've got one of these but maybe it isn't monster enough? 13 kilos and dual mono design though:

I missed one of those for sixty quid in great apparent condition a few years back. We liked this one a lot and the small 430 from the same era was nice as well, but small fry.

A mate has just got an Accuphase P5000, yet to hear it although looks and construction are top class, in his case I do not hold out much hope for it sounding no better than average. This is all due to the fact the bloke is an idiot, he is using an AVR as a pre with some rather average Jamo Home Theater shiny black tower things. I am holding out hope that his usual foray into the rabbit hole of expensive cables, plugs and rhodium plated connectors will get the thing to sing. Ha Ha! Nice amp totally wasted on his Sh#t.

I had a Pioneer SX-636 back in the day and it looked very tasty in the rack. Once went into the barracks at RAF Alconbury and saw big SX-1210s in almost every room banging out some serious din into the corridor. As the guys were off back home they would sell off these monsters in the canteen for silly money I'm told, as well as cheap V8 motors.

Pioneer in the mid 70's held little to the Yamaha gear we sold. CA800 and 1000 in mk1 and 2 had a Class A option, which took a minute or so to come on song, but aided reproduction of reverb and 'air' in a good recording at severe total power loss (CA1000mk2 was 17WPC in Class SA and around 70WPC in AB i remember). Today, it's good looking shite really, as the preamp was so veiled (confirmed by using it on its own)! CR1000 was a switchers dream though and silky smooth sounding - www.thevintageknob.org/yamaha-CR-1000.htmlWith the **10 and **20 series which followed, we felt the sound deteriorated progressively (became grainier and 'greyer' in tone I remember) and the 'feel' definitely took a few notches back as well. The C1 preamp, another switchers delight, has unobtainable components inside which apparently do fail if you're unlucky. www.thevintageknob.org/yamaha-C-1.htmlThey sure don't make 'em like that any more...

How about a lovely JVC JR-S200 receiver. Stunning design, an absolute classic imo.

Serious amp that - Is it one of the 907's ie: Alpha 907DR ? If I came into a bit of dosh I'd search out a 907DR. Serious bit of kit, proper audiophile amp with proper audiophile componentry inside. Dual mono construction, 33.5 kg, 160wpc at 8 ohms It was the flagship circa 90s, lovely looker too. I have the one under it, the Alpha 707DR - looks identical but 130wpc @ 8ohms. The best amp I've ever owned. Detailed, neutral, effortless power delivery - developed a fault recently so I need to have it fixed as it looks like new and I just love how the thing looks and plays

Will be doing so guvnor, she's too minty / sweet to not sort.
I have a few simple things to try that Angus suggested. If no joy with that then I'll have to get it up to him.

The 9090 was the one to go for I remember.
Be warned with some of these though, as so many were all show and no when asked to drive real world speakers... Reliability at this great age is an issue now too. A pal lost his speakers when his beloved Sony 5650 V-FET amp (a once lovely thing) suffered dry joints (around some critical circuit diodes apparently), blew its output stage and put lots of luverly DC into his speakers for which replacement bass units were unavailable!

I'd nick Roy's Luxman too if I was in the neighbourhood.

Oliver, I am curious as to why my last post on this thread has been dissapeared!
It was on topic and entirely factual as an pictorial illustration of the build quality of a vintage Japanese built amplifier compared with another current Manufacurers product, simple as that. I am struggling to identify which forum rule was transgressed?

Perhaps it was because said amp (whilst being a real monster) wasn't Japanese !!

Yes I got that, shouldn't really matter whether I chose an Uk, Us, Ch, etc.etc manufacturer as comparison. The images are irrefutable are they not, ergo, I fail to understand the censorship.
