Soft, boring, polite - I've probably seen that applied to a piece or pieces by every manufacturer under the sun - Audiolab, Fidelity Research etc etc. to say it applies to ALL Jap amps can only be regarded as a generalisation at best in my view.
What is helpful is if folk at least support 'I hate, or boring, polite cr&p' with if they've heard the piece or particular pieces etc as well as what they have or use that they find is not like what they say they dont like - it's just helpful and doesnt come across like a dig (ie: the response to Andy-Rextons 719 liking which was not helpful or informative).
For the record, I've had Technics SU-VX800. Sony TA F700ES, Sansui AU 919 and currently Sansui AU a707DR - Didnt / havnt found any of these to be boring, polite, snoozeville and that's from experience/personal ownership.

I agree with you there Robbie. Qualifying one's opinion with experience of a larger scale, rather than "I owned one sony amp 30yrs ago....." will absolutely garner some weight to it, rather than just appearing to smite a particular piece of kit or a "generalist overview" type of opinion.

I have an Akai AM 95 hiding under my bed, it is a beast. I used to use it for DJing at house parties, it has killed many a speaker. Does it qualify as a "Big Stonking High End Japanese Amps"

You are a bit of a character, Harrison - although your avatar is truly revolting - have we met elsewhere in fora land with you using a different monicker? I'm inclined to suspect not as I am sure I would recognise your style, it's very distinctive! ... and I'm not sure if I'd agree that "most" big Jap amps are soft sounding, that big Technics certainly was, and the mahoosive Rotel 1412 had a heavily rose-tinted preamp section but its power section was admirably neutral. A Marantz 4230 receiver was lovely but warm and cuddly [although that's a Yank]. The Accuphase E202 was rather bland. Hmm, yeah, OK - you might be right. I've never tried a vintage Sansui, though. ... maybe they all just needed a recap, although I did have them all serviced and the EE thought they were OK. Hi Jerry.......Oh you know me mate, we go back a long time..... I've got more alias's than Smith n Jones.....gotta - I'm banned worldwide, Fuk knows why. Guess some folk get a bit threatened by the truth..!!! Love your Blog as always, you really want to flog them daft speakers and settle down with a nice pair of LS3/5As.
