If you’re not bothered about the money, then you have another choice....hand in your notice too! Find another cushy job. Gary It's one option but starting somewhere new at my age is a nightmare. I've only just got over that hump at this place, don't think I could take having to do that all over again. It is a weird world job wise at the moment. I'd personally stick in there until the world settles down a bit. Take the promotion and keep things running how you like it. The issues come when randos come in above you and try to stamp their authority on systems of work that existed perfectly well for 100 years before them.

Thank you all, I'm sure it will all work out one way or another.
If not I can always go part-time order-picking at the 'Pets At Home' warehouse just down the road.

Not so good if you're expected to be the first one in in the morning and last one out at night. Do you know why the old boss is doing one?

Can you pick me out a couple of rag doll cats. Friend of ours breeds ‘em. Kittens go for £900 a pop. What do you mean it’s not that kind of order picking?

Well after 4 months the BMC DAC is back wih it's present owner and untouched by BMC. It has been sat in a warehouse in Germany supoosedly awaiting release by German Customs due to "staff shortages". If only the owner used his loaf and put on the customs declaration that is was only for repair with a zero value it may have not been such a protracted ordeal. BMC could have done somethng to persuade customs that was the case but they couldn't be bothered. I tried to gee them along but all I got was abusive and curt replies in return. I was all for Brexit but there are obvious drawbacks to that move. German efficiency is a myth. If it wasn't they would have won WW2 The Yanks and Soviets were efficient, the British were the innovators, the Germans were a mess. Good engineers though I give them that. I have a friend who is a German craftsman . he used a £400 laser level for a flower bed and took about 2 hours to set it up within the milimeter !!! oh my he is precise . we are hoping to get him to do the big reorder project we have just put out to tender

They lock up at 1800 so you can't stay any later than that even if you feel you need to, and it's already rare that I'm out before 1740 anyway so that won't make much difference. I could come in earlier but I'm already there for 0800 so that's not going to happen even if they make me the CEO. Old boss is only young so he is doing one for a bit more money and a much easier life. At least he reckons it will be easier. He's probably right.

Instead of using a production line, one bloke, or one team of blokes, would build one aircraft or one tank at a time. Great attention to detail, but not so useful when service life would be less than six months before it was shot down or blown up. They still do that at Merc and BMW, one bloke builds one engine. But in peacetime that's a USP, not a screw-up.

But you do like Mondays and Tuesdays at home in winter don't you? And are you any good at telling people what to do? I'd be no good at that. Not even at home, where the cat is higher in the pecking order.

I don't think those diesel engines are hand built, I suppose you could give the robot a slap but then you could get into a whole 'Westworld' situation.

Not even at home, where the cat is higher in the pecking order. Only Mondays - but I'd still get to take holidays. I think there's some law about that. And no, I hate telling people what to do. Even worse having to bollock people for being late or skiving. I don't have the boss mentality. I've told them that already, just got a wave of the hand.

The cat is always top of the pecking order. That's why Hitler had a dog instead.

when I was at FedEx they gave me a couple of new starters to 'induct.' So I opened the session by saying 'Right - there's four ways to do things here. The right way, the wrong way, the FedEx way and my way. And if you do things my way then we'll all get along. That's my set piece and you're allowed to laugh.'
Which I ripped off from Harry Andrew's Sergeant-Major in 'The Hill.'
Of course they'd never seen 'The Hill' and didn't have a scooby who Harry Andrews was, so it fell on stony ground. But it amused me.

I reckon you'll do just fine with this boss job Mart. If you bank the increased pay and live frugally, ie supermarket own brand food and no more top-drawer Russian hookers, maybe you could retire (again) in a couple of years.
You're still (relatively) young, but I think there comes a point where time becomes more important than the money. I feel I've reached that point.

I suppose I could give up the Russian hookers and switch to the domestic variety but its a big ask.
I've no wife, no children, don't really have any hobbies to speak of and I don't play any sports.
I did ten weeks of retirement and I was wandering the streets to fill in the time.
Having said that if the agency had not approached me about this job I might still be doing that. I wasn't actively looking for work.
Did say to myself when I started it that I would give it two years and see how I felt at that point, and I'm a third of the way through that already.
You got almost ten years on me and in a different line of work altogether so I see where you are coming from.

Yeah well the one good thing about being self-employed (probably the only good thing) is being able to reduce your workload at will without getting any grief. That is exactly what I have been doing since Christmas, and my stress levels have gone right down. But if and when I properly retire I will need a hobby that gets me out of the house. I'll have something in place to keep me occupied by the summer. Perhaps at some point could you go part-time where you are, maybe job-share? Best of both worlds.

Part time would be the dream but there's no chance of that in the near future. It's a small company but they are planning to grow quite quickly next couple of years, so it might happen further down the line.

Today I got home for Auckland , 3 days late due to Cyclone Gabrielle. Great trip but a bit stressfull with the cancelations and uncertainty re the flights. 30 hours back with a 5 hour stop in San Francisco, had tome for a quick look around. 😎 Anyway we are safe and sound which is the main thing, some places in the North Island took areal battering. Would recommend New Zealand to anyone, very chilled and friendly I found.

If you were friendly with your ex Boss you could always just get in touch and ask what he was earning ? Worse thing that can happen is that he will not say , but then again he may be only too happy now he is not there to give you full information so you can ensure you get paid the full level you should . Would also ask if they will be replacing you at your current level ? If not then you might be ending up doing both your current and senior job at a single wage . Great for the company but perhaps not so great for your sanity and stress levels . Be careful and make sure that you get all promises and offers in writing first so you can have a decent look at them in your own time .
