I'm in favour of re-nationalising the railway and running it as non-profit (likewise for water and power) but the bloke commentating on that video is an idiot. Couldn't agree more, these industries are the lifeblood of the country and should never have been privatised in the first place. They should all have been run without incurring huge costs to the government, same as a private company, but without making profit hand over fist.

My point was that either way a subsidy for passenger railways is necessary, but at the moment the subsidy includes subsidising the shareholders i.e their dividend from the make-believe profits. If you nationalise then there are no shareholders to subsidise. Consequently either less subsidy will be required or they keep the same level of subsidy and have more money available for things like ticket office staff and conductors. That may be wrong or possibly over-simplistic, I'm a layman in the area of railways, but it seems like common-sense to a bystander. No, you're correct in that the money would not be leaving the UK, but the issue is reinvestment. At present, there is a certain level of investment from the private firms. A level the GOV will not agree to. That's my issue with it all. The Bullshit. sorry that still doesn't add up for me. If we re-nationalise and keep ticket prices and subsidies the same the amount of income is the same - only now part of that income does not go to pay shareholder dividends. So there is more money left in the pot for whatever - including investment. Now if you are saying that the private companies are more likely to put money into investment than the government, that may be true. But levels of infrastructure investment could be set in law upon re-nationalisation. It's not an unsurmountable issue.

Well, part renationalised railway has been quietly in place for around 4 years.....they haven't done it up to now, and they certainly haven't put anything into law about it. They will drain this revenue stream and then Privatise when it starts to cost the government too much in maintaining the rail.....just like they did before.

Can't win. you would think so but since the government grant kicked in ive not had to pay for any leccy, currently my meter shows £135 in credit,im well below the minimum usage as its just me and i work 5 days so its only really evenings and weekends when the usage rate goes up.

It's actually the same for us - in October we put £400 on the leccy pre payment. And with the gov credits and no further contributions from us we are still around 400 quid in credit. Now the gas, that's a different matter... we started out economising and wearing all sorts of fleecy things in our cold house, but since before Christmas we've decided sod it, we'd rather be poor than dead from hypothermia.

Book me in When I was 16, i wondered what it would be like to be 21, When I was 30, I wondered what it would be like to be 40, then, 50 - What is like to be almost 66 ? (Meant in the nicest possible way, although a silly question? )

Ha ha.. yeah it’s the only question really. I remember in the early 70’s at school wondering what life would be like in the year 2000 when I would be in my 40’s. Turns out it was pretty much the same as being 16 as being 60. As being 66. Apart from the pills.

Feel pretty much the same, less hair, odd ache from time to time and the inconvenient thing the engine vibration used to cause, being sat at the back of the bus, as a teen, dont happen like that anymore

And as that great philosopher Fred Wedlock said; "When it takes all night to do what you used to do all night", well it's good to know it's not just me

Well Kampot's changed a bit since I was last here, not all for the good. A night club has opened, I'll have to try and post a photo of it later, a few more bars, I do like the fact the ladies are not pushing you to buy them drinks like they are in PP, much more relaxed feel to this place. Had a great Indian curry last night, will be back there again either tonight or tomorrow. Hired a scooter for a couple of days, certainly makes it easy to get a round, and have already been out for a drive along the river, of course the weather here is perfect for that.

How would you rate the place as a holiday destination Dave? What are the likely costs (flights, accommodation, food and drink)? Fancy somewhere that isn't Spain.
