If it isn't bad enough coping with all the ailments I've had to deal with, the consequences are also starting to bite. Had some friends move to Florida recently and they have invited us over for a holiday. Great idea, that is until I look at the price of holiday insurance. Holy crap, the tickets are just over £400 each, but the insurance for me alone is now £5,000 and the missus is just under £1,000. Bollox to that notion, so I looked at a week in the med which stil tops out at £500, so brexit has had a major effect on that front as well. Good grief Maybe it’s because it’s USA I was very worried about our insurance this summer, what with Fiona being just over 2 years out of cancer treatment and I’ve got a few minor ailments. Anyway.. got cover for travel insurance for 2 weeks hols with Makesure Travel Insurance. Had been recommended by Oncology/Macmillan £48 with all treatments/ records disclosed. But that was for Greece. Dunno if it makes a difference. We were very relieved. Yes... travel insurance shows one tier of rates for anywhere in the world except the USA and another significantly higher rate for USA destinations even more so if one has existing conditions to cover. It gives one an idea of how out of control the American healthcare system is... and viscerally defended.

Haven't noted a significant change in our travel insurance due to Brexit, so it suggests it's the fact the US has an abysmal health care system and you'd likely need a mass of money if something goes wrong out there. I'd have a look around because that's quite simply ridiculous My mate fell off a ladder yesterday and he's in a Florida hospital right now with 3 large breaks in one of his legs. Dread to think what the bill is going to be. We warned them before they went that it will be the medical bills that will cripple them financially, even though the medical insurance they took out only covers 80% maximum. He had 2 knee replacements in the UK last year and he said that would have cost a small fortune in the states.
It is my history of heart and brain problems that has caused the high price in insurance, plus the new diagnosis made while I was in this last time. Brexit has meant we no longer have the E111 system of reciprocal hospital treatments we enjoyed when we were part of the EU.

Not quite true. We now have the UK GLOBAL HEALTH INSURANCE CARD www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/healthcare-abroad/apply-for-a-free-uk-global-health-insurance-card-ghic/

Sometimes it's the little things that satisfy. I noticed the Modulus 686 power light is rather too bright to enjoy listening with the lights off, but happily Neurochrome's ISS (Intelligent Soft Start) has a trimpot for the lights. So now it is a cozy dim green. Happy.

Heard the other day that my half brother has Motor Neurone Disease. It sounds like he is in very rapid decline. He lives in Edinburgh, and has asked that no one comes to visit.
A few days on and I'm still in shock about it. He's mid to late 70s.

He has difficulty talking now, apparently, so telephone is no good. Anyway, thanks and on to happier things! .....

Today I am impatiently awaiting the return of my Black Ice DAC from Robert Airey via DHL between 11:53 & 20:00, following his latest round of updates/pimping.
The initial and latest updates are as follows:
Initial upgrades… Nov 21 • Synergistic Research Black fuse • Mundorf Supreme output capacitors • Z-foil resistors on output tube board (x4) • 5v regulator to NewClassD • 2x low voltage caps upgraded in value and to Nichicon KA
Now (14/12/22) and extra to the above… • V-caps ODAM on output (Mundorf out) • Cast Silver output wires • Audio Note silver plated RCA’s • 12v regulator now NewClassD • SR Black fuse orientation corrected • Furutech gold IEC • DC cap upgrade on mains board - Mundorf Evo/Oil • Bypassed cheap mains 230v jumper • Low voltage caps swapped to Audio Note • High voltage caps swapped to Audio Note • Low voltage bypass caps now Wima • Disconnected blue (valve) and orange (top) LEDs
Robert had sourced some DH Labs, gold on copper RCA sockets at my request, unfortunately the case was too thick so he was unable to fit them as they were 2mm too short, so I've had to make do with the AN silver on brass sockets.

Finally fot the dates for my Illiac unclogging op and the missus has finally got her date for her cataract op as well. Mine is on the 5th January and hers is on the 9th January. Had the ultrasound on my neck last week and that couldn't locate the blockage as it is high up in the skull and ultrasound cannot penetrate bone, so will wait to see what happens next on that front.
The car has been returned from being repaired and the loan car has gone back. A Skoda Kodiaq and I didn't like it one bit although it looked nice. Ate petrol at a rapid rate and the controls are a nightmare.

Today I have maxed out my Neurochrome 286 amplifier.
I have been wondering/contemplating an upgrade to linear power supply, mine had two individual switch mode supplies. Thus I needed the components for the linear psu plus a case to put them in. A realisation came this morning that I have got these already, lurking under the sofa bed in the spare bedroom in the form of a faulty Monarchy Audio SM-70 Pro. I tried to fix in on numerous occasions but I think the transistors I bought were Chines 'non copies'. Anyway the 286 boards were transferred along with fitting copper RCA's and binding posts, along with triple C wiring. Talk about good, it's flippin' fantastic. I could kick myself for not realising earlier that I had most of the required bits.

firebottle I'm a little confused with the above post, you've maxed out your 286 amplifier, yet your 286 boards were transferred to the Monarchy. Does this mean the 286 amplifier is now in a Monarchy case?

DAMN!!! The BI now has 35 hrs under its belt since returning to Lurch Towers (left running with RP overnight) and it sounds like a different animal. It was evident at initial switch on that the 2nd round of mods had wrought improvements, improvements that have become more and more apparent as the hours stack up, with big SQ uplifts in all areas. Soundstage imaging, size, space and air. Bass definition, authority and slam. Richness, coherence, Macro and micro detail, timbre and texture.
RP has never sounded so good, and I'm hearing stuff on albums/tracks I know well that I didn't know existed. Like spatial clues and what were faint but pleasant background sounds that have resolved into distinct notes/separate cymbal taps/bass guitar noodling. Robert has done a stonking job on the BI and this has got to be the best £411 I've spent on my system in a long while, worth every penny.

found ice on the inside of my bathroom window. Don't think I will be taking a shower today.
Supposed to warm up a bit later on today. Really has been a bad couple of weeks here. If we get any more of it I am going to pitch a tent in the living room and move in there. Sick of spending money on heating that barely scratches the surface.

Last few mornings every window in the house was frozen. They are normally covered in condensation until I vac it off. But they have been ice from top to bottom. Very beautiful but very cold. Tent idea sounds a good one.
