Anybody got any listening experience with these? Apparently they were a no expense spared type of design but faced cost cutting measures before production. A pair has come up local to me, way overpriced and in need of new rubbers on every driver. I won't buy them but these have piqued my interest. A bit of information here: www.omte.nl/FB825.htm

Not heard those, but I'll admit, I tend not to like speakers with ribbon tweeters.

They look well made, but I’ve never seen them before.

There was a few models in the FB range including one with flat honeycomb drivers and ribbon tweeters; always fancied a pair. The flagship model was active and digital ready. The Audiophile did a feature on it.

Every driver needs new foam surrounds and one of the drivers has no decorative plastic surround to cover the screw holes. I may send him an offer of £150 if the foams are still available.

Well definitely not worth that much. 150 might be fair but he might be too much of an idiot to think so.

Spoke the the seller today and as suspected, he's not going to play ball.
£400 is the lowest he will take. I wished him good luck.

They look like they could be very good. 3 way with the crossovers right out of the presence band. But he's having laugh asking £400 when all the drivers need doing.

Lots of people probably wouldn’t buy a speaker from Philips, me included.

Philips made some well thought out gear, remember, most transports of note had a Philips built assembly and the most desirable ones still fetch great money. I know they aren't a prestige speaker but there is something about them that says to me that they are worth a listen. Plus cats are puuuurfect for vibration damping lol

I reckon they'd be a big disappointment mate. I've just scrapped a small pair of Philips ribbon tweeter speakers, they just weren't nice. In fact Philips were guilty of making one of the nastiest tweeters around, the AD0160, although that didn't stop Goodmans using them in their SL series speakers, which all had a nasty sizzle at the top!

Hmm, I think it's one of those times that we just won't find out. They certainly have a cult following but we'll never know.

But what about bass! I just can't see a 10" full range driver hitting those low notes with authority

Well like I said, it'll go plenty deep enough. Also, ten inch is about as big as you can go with a full range unit without cone colourations through the mid getting too intrusive. One of the most potent bottom ends I've ever heard came from a speaker using a ten inch driver and that was the ESS AMT1 Tower, they are highly sought after.

Doing a bit of research into the drivers you linked to and they seem to be pretty well liked ***EDIT: Looked at the wrong drivers. Ignore me lol*** Its just that whole "got to build a cab" thing that puts me on the back foot. I have a mate who is a carpenter and im sure he'd knock a set up but are they going to crucify the pioneers? is it worth the aggro?

You know geoff, it could be a lot of fun. I like the look of the drivers and they seem to have a decent cabinet drawing to go with it. I'll have a chat with my carpenter friend and see what price id be looking at for his help. As you have done a boat load on speakers, what material would you build the cabs out of?

If cost isn't an issue, I'd favour birch ply, but there's not much wrong with MDF or HDF, some even swear by good old chipboard. At least with decent birch ply, you can just stain/lacquer it to get a nice appearance. Chipboard has to be veneered or laminated, but that give good constrained layer benefits.
