If you want a proper hi-fi speaker forget single driver options. Sure they will make a pleasant enough sound but it isn't enough. Not for me anyway. if they really worked as well as the proponents suggest then everyone would be using them. One driver, no crossover, just knock up the box and you're away. The reality is they're a massive compromise. Isn't that effectively what you are doi g with the tannoy? I realise there's a tweeter In the driver but essentially it's a full range driver with tweeter isn't it?

Nope it's a horn loaded compression driver, covers 1 Khz upwards. Deffo not a single driver speaker, it's dual concentric.
Try finding a tweeter that will cover down to 1Khz

if I blow the tweeters they are £300 each to replace!
The newest version of the speakers is £5000 retail. I think they have the Berylium tweeters though. I'm slumming it with titanium.
I was lucky to get them at that price but they hung around for a while on AoS with no interest. No-one wants Focals because they're 'bright and harsh'.

And a nice tweeter it is too.

I designed a couple of pairs many years ago using the Loudspeaker Cookbook, Back before there was the internet and Boxcalc and all that. Do all the maths with a pocket calculator and the back of an envelope.
The set I did for a mate he was well happy with. All he listened to was Techno and House and he kept blowing tweeters trying to crank up teeny-tiny speakers to club levels. I did him some with Motorola Piezo tweeters so he could never blow them. And a Kevlar bass driver. Quite big, 55 litres. He built them himself from my plans.
The set I did for myself weren't bad but I started experimenting with them to try to learn more and now they're knackered. Still got them though.

That's not unreasonable but goddam they are are ugly lol Exactly the same thought crossed my mind. The stying is certainly unfortunate. Adtually, the most revealing speakers I've heard are the Quad ESL57.

Extremely uncoloured though IMO.

I get what you mean about weight, but it’s also speed. If I’m being picky, the treble is a bit dull too. Spicas do everything quads will, yet they keep all the good things a box speaker does. All IMHO of course.

Are you sure that's a coax driver? The tweeter is not a true ribbon by the way, it's a HiVi isodynamic unit from China. Which are OK, but cheap.
