Dunno if 2.5 way vs 3 way is always black and white. I can turn off my 12" bass and then have a 2.5 way speaker. I have compared it to Ektas (3 way) or Rev 851s (3 way) , both with similar quality drivers. In this case I prefer the 2.5way (as have others). There is never a one size fits all solution. Simpler XOs with fewer components can have a positive effective too. Having two drivers doing bass can help (vs one driver doing bass on 3 way). I accept there are drawbacks to 2.5way too. Pro and cons to most engineering approaches to most problems. Do you prefer 4 way and 5 way to 3 way for similar reasons? In principle I'm in favour of each driver covering as little of the frequency range as possible. OFC drivers have got better over the years so you can get away with more using fewer drivers than back in the 70s or 80s providing the budget is there. I did once get a listen to a Yank speaker that was 5 way - tweeter, upper and lower mid, 15 inch bass and 12 inch bass - interestingly the 12 inch did the low bass not the 15, on the grounds that the low bass needed the 'speed'. Can't recall the name of them now. Keep thinking Dunlavey but might not have been. Anyway they were really good. Ultimately the implementation is almost everything so I judge every speaker on it's own merits. If I was starting over like Oli I'd go fully active with DSP and subwoofers - probably Neumann. But that's not for everyone.

Quite honestly, yesterday I just turned them off. They didn't sound great at all. Today, they sound better. Whether that's because I'd left the amp on over night or not, I don't know, but it's definitely better. Very acceptable sound from the Exposure and Maggie combo. Listening to Ray Lamontagne - Ouroboros and it's really immersive. Giant wall of sound like, but enjoyable.

Yep. I can understand the giant wall of sound. Any chance of the ‘speakers just disappearing’😉
Seriously…… enjoy this interesting side path on your sound journey 😁

It's not their fault, in a big room they probably wouldn't exist in your attention, but they do here. They don't sound terrible, but you can tell they are squashed in

How far are they from the wall behind? You probably already know this, but the precise amount of toe in can significantly change the frequency balance on those. Since you have the tweeters on the outside, you'll want the tweeter edge an inch or two farther from your ear than the opposite edge is. And you really will want some strong diffusion to break up the sound behind them. That will have a large effect on how open or closed they sound.
Oh, and if they were stored with the magnetic stays attached across them, the sock may have stuck to the speaker mylar for a while, messing with the sound.

Update:
The speaker situation has now been fully resolved. I have commissioned a pair of SEAS-NEXTEL-2F after much debate. I was very keen to go for the Ellipticor, but ultimately the system rebuild required more funds than i could put into one component.
The next on the list is either the DAC or the Amplifier. I have a couple of contenders for consideration:
Topping D90 III, Singxer – SDA-6 PRO2, aqvox
Krell KSA50s, Elipson A2700, Purifi.
Still lots to do, lots to think about, but with the speakers due in March...i need to get cracking.

Oli I still own an original Krell KSA50 the full class A one which is out on loan . It is a very good amplifier but in your circumstance I would suggest that the original KSA100 would be better suited and give you the probabilities speakers will need . Above this in the range I feel they gain power but lose the sweetness and naturalness of the lower powered pair .

If I was looking at brand new power amps I'd probably get one of these apollonaudio.com/product/hypex-nc252mp-module-stereo-amplifier/About a grand delivered if you want the gold finish, which of course you will. 50S is a solid S/H choice got no desire to change it. 50 watt rating but actually does about 80 into 8 ohms before clipping. going up to 100 watts from 50 only gives 3dB more headroom. Unlikely to be a deal breaker. For DAC at that price level I'd get an RME then you have parametric EQ if you need it.

I like what they have done with the Purifi modules. I think i am going to go Purifi again, but maybe a little different. As for DACs, I am just not inspired by the RME. I don't know why but i just don't feel any pull towards it. I see Singxer have done a new DAC with 2x 4499EQ in. Thats now leading my thought process.

Ah that Singxer does look pretty cool. Yeah, it certainly ticks a lot of boxes IMO. I'd like a full set of measurements to peruse, but in the absence of any, I may just have a punt. I have a BBU to build for someone and a new amplifier to build, then I'll have a look at it properly
