I need £8k a year to live on. With a million quid I could retire in absolute luxury but then I don't have the need to spend money on ponds, Camaros or any other tat. Says a man who likes to use a small welding machine to play music

For me, a living room without books would be tasteless, however richly furnished, or however many shiny new gadgets it contained. It would be like a hotel room. A room needs to display some of the character of the person/people who live in it to be 'tasteful'. We probably take the 'shabby chic' look to extremes. A bit of dusting probably wouldn't go amiss.

It could be pretty good, but 50k will get you a very good European made car, such as an M5, 911 etc.

Many moons ago I was earning obscene amounts of money but I can honestly say that it never brought me any happiness at all.
I now have a modest detached bungalow on a private estate, paid for in full, with 2 cars both over 17 years old. Both of these cars are paid for, very reliable and sail through their MOTs every year and that is good enough for me. I am a pensioner now and the missus works part time and we pay all our bills ech month with a little left over but not much. I don't have any surplus money to splosh out on hifi, but having said that I am very happy with my system as it is.

Most modern cars are tat, I wasn't picking on the Camaro in particular. But if you look at the quality of the materials it is tat, there's no two ways about it. If I was going to get a car I'd get a low mileage Lexus LS400 because they did have a great build quality, like the old Mercs did except I wouldn't ever have a Merc.
If we're talking yank muscle cars then I'd go for a restored one from between 1966-1972, prefer the Camaro styling from back then anyway but then that's just personal taste.
Being an old hippie I've never had any interest in showing off wealth or accumulating possessions. It's all just tat to me. I have a decent hi-fi because I like my music but even that only owes me £2K. I don't live in squalor but then neither am I up at 0430 waxing the bathroom floor. I don't want to live like that. It's obsessive and I'm way too idle.
I could buy a bigger and better house but I'm happy where I am and it's sufficient for my needs. And yes, for the purposes of the pissing contest, I could go out tomorrow and buy a new Camaro for cash (ofc) if I wanted to. But I just don't.

Modern cars are the equivalent of 'white goods'. You use them until they wear out and then bin them. In twenty years they will be unusable as no parts will be available. With maybe rare exceptions, they will never become 'classics'.

worthless money pit junk german pos..over engineered and will cost u a fortune in repairs and be worth about 50 quid once 8 years old
AVOID THESE POS LUXERY GERMAN CARS LIKE THE PLAGUE
my mate here bought a 8 year old 100k audi A8 ..was 100 grand new..he paid 15k for it lol..some twat lost 85k over 8 years...he then spent about 10 grand trying to keep the pos on the road..in the end the gearbox blew up...he sold it for 1200 quid.
so in 9 years the utter pos went from a 100 grand car to a worthless pile of junk..
YOU CANT OWN a over engineered german car outside of warranty...
only german car worth owning is the 911 porsche..u need to be rich to keep it serviced..only an utter fool buys these audi a8's and such..
100 grand car new lol..the minute u drive it off the forecourt you'll be waving goodbye to 30k plus..
mercs lol..i have seen new mercs here rust away in front of my eyes..50k new cars basically worth scrap value in 6 years flat..me mate bought a new vito costing 55k..7 years later he scrapped it from mases of rust bmw's use lots of plastic on their motors..100k miles the motor will be toast..
u buy a classic yank car the car will increase in value

Old Fords like the Mk 1 and 2 Escort and the Cortinas are worth proper money now. Never saw that coming. I mean the XRs and the RSI's fair enough. But the standard models?

I would never buy a bramd new car again because the depreciation makes me faint. Lost over 20 grand on a new BMW 7 series and that annoyed the heck out of me. I buy older cars now because that is someone else's money pissed down the drain and not mine.

About ten years ago I was offered a Skyline for three grand. Couple of minor issues with it ofc nothing expensive to sort. I knew it would be a long term earner but had nowhere to put it on VORN. Tried to get a mate to clear all the crap out of his garage so we could stash it there. Offered him half the proceeds but he wasn't having it, he reckoned they would never go up in value so he couldn't be arsed.

Parked up in his driveway are, amongst others, a Rolls-Royce, a Bentley, a Jaguar and a Mercedes. I've never seen any of them on the road or even seen him cleaning them; they just sit there, depreciating.

My brother has just purchased an Audi A1, pre registered, (400 miles on the clock) auto, 150ps, so hopefully will last a good number of years since we don't do many miles. His last car was a Renault Clio, kept for more than 10 years with 94k on the clock.
