I think there's a few 790's. But I stand corrected.

Doesn't matter if it's 20, 30, 50 or 100 years old. If it sounds, it sounds good!!

Still using the XTZ as an integrated - Krell goes off to be mended tomorrow - Yay!
In the meantime thought I would swap out the Spotfire interconnect for the MC Klotz. That means apart from speakers I now have my TV set up as my main set up. That worked well with the Klotz on the odd occasion I played a CD through it so thought it was worth a go. Thought it might be a bit less 'dark' than with the Spotifre.
Just shows how interconnects can be so dependant on what they are connecting. With the Krell/DCB1 amplification the Spotfire wins hands down, no contest. But with the XTZ, the Klotz is better. Easier to hear what is happening in the top end, cleaner and sweeter. Not a huge difference, I think I might struggle in a blind test without a lot of prep.
My main issue now is that bass is still a little softer and not as defined as with the Krell/dcb1 and there's not as much presence at low volume. Every note is now no longer a 'wow' moment. I'm also listening at a slightly higher level than I needed to before. But it is a sub 1K integrated verses £10K worth of pre-power so not really a surprise.

Makes you wonder what a competent modder could squeeze out of the XTZ. It’s a lot of amp for the money. Damn attractive too imo.

The toroidial transformer in it is not much smaller than the one in the Krell 50s. But the bass is obviously a bit softer if you compare them back to back. Good looking amp, I agree, you could get them all in silver too so you'd be sorted for that.

I think he tried to fix it and got out of his depth before scrapping it. Pity.

Seems like reliability was an issue with them, although no problems with mine so far and it has thousands of hours on it. Probably way more than the Krell which is on the fritz. Although I think that was down to using it as a PA amp at that bake-off.

Pleased that you're getting the Krell sorted, hope it's not too expensive.

If it's just a dry joint won't cost me anything. If it's the big reservoir caps I think Ollie says they are about a ton each.
Not that bothered really, never worried about spending money on hi-fi because I get so much use and enjoyment out of it.
the only thing I'm a bit worried about is if he can't find the fault.

I used to have 8 NOS Caps identical to those in my KSA50. Yet another sale I regret.

My Krell currently in bits. One channel is okay, the other has burn marks on the circuit board and some components have lifted. On the plus side my EE reckons he can reconstruct the damaged side by using the other side as a guide. So there is hope but it's not a small task. Don't know what I'm going to do if he can't sort it. Might end up with one of those Chinese knock-offs after all...

urgh, that's bad news - unfortunately a risk with any vintage kit, however well made. At least since it's (I assume) discrete components, as long as they can be bought, he has a good chance - with a chip based device its replace or bin and that's it.

I would insist that any components replaced on one channel, are also replaced on the other channel, just to ensure that each channel remains a 'mirror image' of the other.

Agree that would be ideal but as he's doing it for me as a favour I'm not really in a position to insist on anything.
As long as the values are the same I can't see it being noticeable.

I know otherwise I got to find another Krell. Or similar. There's a minty Radford STA15 just come up on AoS at a good price, but someone is already on it and I don't really want valves. Although I'd make an exception with a Radford.
Really hard to find anything as good that isn't crazy money.

A word of advice to mirror what's been said already, If one channel is getting replacement parts, do the exact same for the other channel. Even thought I doubt there's been much in the way of value drift, it's far better to have both channels aging at the same rate. New in o e side may not be totally audible now but who knows in the future. Also, use either like for like or go up a few steps. The ERO(?) Caps I took out of mine were hindering the Krell. This was only revealed when i put An Kaisei in. Hope it gets sorted mate as that will be very difficult to replace.

Ollie, this is a KRELL we're talking about, with approaching twenty electrolytics a channel, highish bias current amps right from the input (not single ended like yours). Honestly, if you repair one board and replace a couple of bits, in just a few minutes, these replacement parts should have bedded in and I can assure you, unless there's an issue elsewhere, you wouldn't know the thing would have been repaired audibly, or almost certainly on a test bench. I doubt your amp would have needed bloody AN foo-caps either. A set of nice 105 degree Panasonics would probably have done just as well if not better (I've never been an AN fan, sorry) I bet one of the Pro crown power amps with linear supplies rather than switching ones (they're well under five hundred quid) would probably give a good sound to high fidelity standards Slightly higher price - some of the Hypex amps are setting incredible standards at a thirds of the also outstanding Benchmark power amp - I say this as you want a 'professional sound quality' power amp. In the meantime, I could let my late issue (different case finish) LK280/SPARK go for very little dosh - and this one totally surprised me how good it was.....

Ollie I hear you but the bloke is doing it as a favour, I can't turn around and say 'Oh yeah while you're at it replace the other channel for me too.' If I was paying I would but he won't accept money off me. As for improving it, mate I really don't feel the need. You come up here when it is all back together again and you'll hear why Dave - the Benchmark is one I'm looking at if repair proves futile and I can't find another Krell. The specs are superb. www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-benchmark-ahb2-amp.7628/

Sounded horrible. Put the AN in and all was right with the world. Believe me, Dave, I could've done without spending £40 on 4 caps lol Macca, I may let my Krell go in favour of a smaller unit so don't dismay if you can't get yours fixed. I feel I may end up with a Hypex unit as I have an urge to build one or a neuro chrome unit. Could maybe factor in a deal on your JMLabs when/if the Tannoys have passed your acceptability tests.

If you do decide to sell your Krell I'll have it off you whether mine gets fixed or not. If I have two they can't both go wrong at once, not even with my luck!

Shouldn't have if the caps weren't in the signal path, but there you go... Have a look here, for two amp pics which bypass macca's Krell in date - www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/fuses-do-affect-sound-the-question-is-how-much.50/The thread's all about fuses, but I was far more interested in the Acurus pic and also 'half' a Krell FPB 350, which makes Macca's 50S look simple. Sadly, the FPB's aren't totally bomb-proof either and a good few fail. Just think how an average Joe in the future is going to try to repair this. Maybe it matters not, but the signal's got to try to pass through this thing with little to no added distortion... Like my geriatric Crown, maybe the signal path is actually very simple, but with loads of parts 'around' each gain block?

I'll have to give it some serious thought as i am SO reluctant to let it go. I have no idea whether the Neurochrome is likely to get near is. Such a scary move as i doubt i'd be able to afford to buy another, if one came up. Might be madness to sell it. I see prices are rising again! Cheapest KSA 100 MK2 is £2250
