Just pick up the pre amp and hold it away from the dac. tried moving the DAC away from the pre-amp but no change. Pretty sure it is the interconnect but I don't have any others that are long enough to replace them. Despite having loads of them. 1.8m ok?

Yes, that's five foot eight so easily long enough. Will I have to cover my eyes when I see the cost?

ordered some new interconnects off of Amazon, £8.99, 1.8 metres, see if that solves the hum problem, if it does will think about the £200 option.
if not the problem lies elsewhere and no interconnect at any price will fix it. Should be here tomorrow.

I had similar problem when using unshielded 5m interconnects between pre and power amp. A shielded cable sorted it.

I ordered shielded cables but not arrived today. Although I'm pretty sure the Belden Pure AV I'm using now are shielded too.
I think it's a fault on the cable.

cables arrived. Or should say 'cable' since it turns out I wrongly assumed I was ordering a stereo pair.
Looks pretty crappy too. For a pair the price was okay, for just one cable of this quality it's way too much.
I think I will have another think about this.

lol
Can you knock me up something cheaper than two hundred quid? You know me, I can't hear the difference anyway but there's a standard I don't like to go below just for peace of mind.
If I wasn't finishing work I'd have just have said yes, send me the £200 cables, but I'm supposed to be watching the pennies.
Or if anyone else reading this has a 1.5 metre set of half-decent interconnects they want to unload give me a shout.

1.5m? Someone must have something licking around. If not I could knock up some Klotz MC5000. I have some kicking about from when I used a balanced cable between my Pre in the rack and power amps next to the speakers. Only problem is the time it will take for the cables to get to you.

Thanks Kevin but I think I might just forget about having the equipment up high and just go back to using the Spotify cable. I was 100% happy with that set-up.

About £20 should be enough for a reasonable 2M cable pair.

macca I have a 2m pair of Cambridge screened ICs you can have FOC just PM me your address. Thanks for the offer mate, you reminded me that I have some long Cambridge cables that I lent to a friend. Don't think he's using them so I'll see if I can get them back. Still considering my options on this.

got the interconnects back off my mate - he only lives a few doors down - tried them and still got hum.
Must mean it is the pre amp or power amp. Suspect the pre amp as that has previous form in this regard. So will swap that out tomorrow and see what's what.
I was having a good run too, must be almost a year since something last broke.

You know what you need........ I won't say it, I'm only kidding lol. Shame that. At least it isn't the cable and you haven't chucked £200 (or less) on a new pair. Reckon you have a ropey RCA socket again?

yes I reckon it might be. Got the EE in the pro shop to fix it for me last time. He'll want a drink but it's a lot cheaper than laying out £200.
I hope that's what it is anyway as it's an easy fix.
will just have to live with the Philips pre for a week or so. It's only a tiny bit more opaque than the DCB1 so no major hardship.

It's ok in the short term isn't it, but I know I got itchy waiting to rebuild my pre. Funny how it gets worse the longer it goes on.

Yeah, you can't go backwards in this game. Went from the stepped attenuator to the TKD pot whilst I was rebuilding the pre....it just stood out like a sore thumb...couldn't wait to get it out. I need to flog that, I've just remembered lol

put in Philips pre-amp - dead silent with volume on max, no hiss, no hum, even right close to the speakers. DCB1 will have to go to the hospital. Again. On the plus side the Philips is the best looking pre-amp ever made. And look at all those buttons and switches that you will never use. Even has loudness control. facebook marketplace link

it is true but personally I much prefer purposeful appearance to something designed for a tart's boudoir, which is what most of the modern kit looks like to me.

been listening to some Steely Dan and some Earth, Wind And Fire, don't feel like I'm being short-changed but I still think it loses just a little bit to the DCB1.
With DCB1 it sounds like there is nothing between you and the studio, with the Philips it's just not quite as 'raw', but there's nothing to fault.
