That's about 2 feet in diameter, would tight and secured with duct tape. Perfect. Even better if you have 3 that size stacked on top of each other.

Macca, please see link I edited in re how to stick on walls. Something like that would do the trick I'm sure. May even do the ceiling.

I looked at the rock wool link, thought I might get a set of 3, about £30. Very reasonable. Plus £50 delivery. Wtf.

Smoking more at the moment because I'm working from home so it's costing me £45 a week. Usually it's £30 a week. Sometimes get duty free of a mate who goes abroad a lot on business and he doesn't smoke so I get his allowance. Works out about half the price. I only ever smoke roll-ups and cigars though.
One of the girls at work asked me how much it cost me to smoke, I told her and she went nuts. Tells me that it's a waste of money and just think of all the other things I could do with that cash. So I asked her how much her cellphone bill was each month and she went red. Eventually she admitted that if it was under £300 that was a good month.

£300 a month for a cellphone? I don't understand. My phone contract costs about £26 a month. What am I missing? ______ Hmm. Instead of the phone I could take up smoking. I could then plan on dying sooner, so I could use up my savings quicker and splurge it on some hifi megakit. Woohoo, that sounds like a win!

Pretty much my plan Jerry Well, I have placed an order for four 50x50 cm acoustic tiles of the type designed for mid and high frequencies. Figure I'll put two on the door behind the listening position and one on the wall that the right-hand speaker is close to, leaving one to experiment with in a variety of spots. Don't know what if any effect they will have but it will at least make it look like I'm taking it all very seriously. Cost £32.50 including delivery so not a massive punt. Here's the link to them www.studiospares.com/Studio-Gear/Acoustic-Tiles/Antiverb-30-Acoustic-Foam-Tile-25mm_465300.htm

put the acoustic panels up on the door and the section of blank wall between the window and the door - the wall behind the listening position that is.
They cover pretty much the whole door. I stuck them up with duct tape, just a lash up for proof of concept.
So what was the result?
Well the panels seem to be made of the only material in the world that duct tape doesn't stick to very well. As a result they all, one by one, gradually fell off whilst I was listening. On the plus side this did mean that I was able to asses the sound changes as the room treatment was gradually removed, and without leaving my seat. Excellent!
Star of the show is the big roll of loft insulation in the corner. Putting that there has got me back to where I was when the big plant was there. Amazing what a difference it makes, helps with the bass too. Sounds more balanced with the rest of the frequency spectrum and also a bit more presence to it. Those mid and top reflections that were bugging me are gone. Would be even better if I had a few more rolls stacked on top as Jim suggested, will have to check if I have anymore of them but I don't think I do.
Covering the door, which is a big, completely flat surface also made a difference but more subtle. Nevertheless I will be sorting out some suitable glue and putting the panels back on it permanently.
I'd recommend looking at treatments like this for the corners and walls behind the listening position if you haven't already, it does make a tangible improvement.

Haha made me chuckle that your panel's fell off and changed the sound.
Good on ya for giving them a go.

They want fifteen quid for a can of suitable spray adhesive for sticking them up! Fifteen quid! You can't just use anything because with the panels being foam some adhesives will dissolve them. I suppose I will have to bite the bullet if I want to proceed.

Well given I'm already into it for £35 for the panels I suppose I might as well. I mean luckily fifteen quid isn't a big deal to me but I don't like being ripped off. It's a can of glue, why does it cost an hour's wages? If it was a fiver for a can plus a couple of quid for delivery I'd be okay with that.

Can't you hang them like you would a picture, couple of screws and some string?

Post by macca on Jun 12, 2020 11:58:34 GMT
Possibly, but then I've got to get screws and string. And I don't really want to screw into the door itself. Drawing pins might work, must see if I have any if them around. The foam might be too thick though.

Cheers. It's a bit pricy for second-hand though. £888 for a new one so only £168 cheaper than new. If it was £500 then I'd be tempted.

Was having another listen last night and I'm still not happy with the bass I'm getting. I even went to the extent of checking all the wiring. You know when you're doing that something isn't cutting it. By a process of elimination it really has to be the Oppo.
It's not terrible but it's just a bit slack and lacks a bit of weight and impact. It's only really noticeable on some music - like I was playing that Daft Punk album that has some really good club-style bass on a couple of the tunes and it was obviously not as good as I have been used to.
And now I've noticed it on stuff like that I notice it on everything.
It's not so bad I couldn't live with it but when you've had better it's hard to go back.
So I'm thinking about another CD player. My theory is this is a power-supply thing (although that is speculation I admit) so an off board DAC would not necessarily solve the problem. Or would it? I'm in a quandry.

I heard a Lampizator this morning and it was the bees knees. Seriously good. Buy a dAC it can always be sold if you dont love it.

I think I will if for no other reason than to rule it out.
Lampizator has really impressed me the couple of times I've heard their gear. Costs proper money though!
