You will have to build a 2nd one for the house. No chance. The class D will do a sterling Job in the garage. I've been in there working most of the day, so I thought I'd have a listen and see how hot it gets in use. Turns out it doesn't get hot at all. The bracket the 686 boards come affixed to are actually cold to the touch. I hadn't put any thermal past between the heatsink and the bracket as I didn't believe it needed any, but have kept an eye on it today. 4 hours if solid High db music and everything is cold to the touch. I may just put some in so I can forget about it lol.

Heatsink on my monos barely reach above ambient, I do have bergquist sheet between them.
For wire I use 2.5mm for all power, 4mm for speaker run due to length. More than enough.

I can't think of a metal that's conductivity improves as it's temperature rises? So maybe not? I think it's more important for it to be stable? Gets too hot and shuts down/breaks....vs stays cool, never shuts down? Dunno, never thought about it overly. I suspect that by "warming up" we actually mean "give it some time to get up to operating temp so that it stabilises" Could be any temperature though.

Unless you are driving a big load, the 686 will be ambling along putting out about 1W. It is not going to break a sweat at that level.

No. There's no connection between sound quality and how warm the amplifier gets.

Sounds pretty conclusive that temperature doesn't matter as long as it's operating temperature.

I suppose if the internal heat gets too high then components will start to drift in their parameters before they start to fail completely. So you could have too hot, but not too cool.

The front panel was finished today. After a lot of indecisive thinking about how I want the panel to look, the choice was taken out of my hands. Unbeknownst to me, the was a dent in the front panel. I hadn't really inspected it as i was focussed on the rest of the stuff I had to do to get this up and running. Long story short, and a few other imperfections coming to light, I opted to have a line machined, this removing a minor, but now visible mark, and we took the small symbol from the Neurochrome logo to hide the dent. It's not how I imagined it when I started out, but I think it's actually turned out pretty well. Fitting the front panel effectively marking this build as complete. Huge thanks to phonomac for his help drilling and tapping the holes, and for the use of his excellent power supply supply. Now, it's time to build some Phonostages.

Well done! Who did the work on the front face?
