Hey Olster, where are we currently at with regards to the Avalon ? It's out on loan at the minute Rob. First outing in an alien system!!! Cheers Olster, do let us know what the loaner thinks of it. I need to hear something like this to know first hand what you get. Remind me of price point please - and yes, i know it isnt a budget phono stage

It's certainly worth thinking about, as I find it impossible to go back once I have heard something I want. Some of the early interest in this has cried off due to me not giving them away in Christmas crackers. I understand, because of you can't/won't stretch to one, why put yourself through it.

I'd be interested in having a listen if that's OK at some point - no rush mind.

True, and that's life, quality tends to cost and it's pointless making these things to break even or make zilch for all the time and effort involved. My ideal stretch would be £1k but I'd want a killer phono stage for that and if there is one, where/which is it ?? is the million dollar question for me

firebottle robbiegong Gents, I LOVE Phonostage discussions, but let's start a thread. I don't want this one to drift. I've deleted the posts instead of moving them, as my phone is all I have to hand, but Rob, start a thread mate. Happy to join in there.

It did, but it wasn't really ideally placed to get any feedback was it. Too many active systems and digital dominating proceedings.....so I'm told. This is it's first real world, settled system that it will reside in, rather than in one of our systems that are massively familiar

Sorry if I missed it somewhere, but what, are the key specs including things like capacitance and resistance loading for MM/MC respectively? Is there a provision for adjusting the loading to suit different cartridges? Thanks!

Is there a provision for adjusting the loading to suit different cartridges? Thanks! Yes loading is done on the PCB via jumpers. Capacitance I believe is around 100pf, but I'll double check that for you. Other key specs are in the thread somewhere, but it basically just measures superbly all over the place. Very pleased with it. I'll get some concrete details in due course.

Spent today rebuilding the Phonostage from the ground up. New PS PCB as I used the old one for other things, PC-TRIPLE C wiring, WBT sockets, added the MM function.....you know, the usual lol. Ran out of time to finish it today, but it will definitely be done in time for the Bakeoff.

It's been a while since i updated the Avalon thread. This is mainly due to building them lol.
Since the last post, we have finally managed to nail down some verified measurments. I thought i would share them here first.
All measurements were taken using a specially made and calibrated inverse RIAA and checked against three PCB's to prove consistency. We also used a 500uV input to replicate a MC cartridge, such as a Kontapunkt b.
SPECS:
SNR: -73db (unweighted)
THD+N: 0.0026%
RIAA: +/- 0.05db (20hz-20khz)
MC Gain: 66db
MM Gain: 39db

You do mean 500uV.
