Not heard from Modushop yet about my case. They were quick to respond last week (responded late on Thursday night), but nothing today. I don't fancy cutting all the holes in it myself.

F### me. Nice modified case is close to €500.
Luckily there is 20% off later this week.
Is the3mm aluminium top panel worth the extra cash compared to the "iron" one?

It appears that Modushop made a little mistake with the cost modifications required. They have e-mailed me to inform me. The case is now closer to €400, so close to €300 with the Black Friday offer, until you add VAT, and then we are back to close to €400.

If getting Modushop to modify a back panel of a Dissipante case for you, you need the aluminium one. The cheaper version has a steel rear panel, which Modushop will not drill.

Case is ordered. This had better be my end game amplifier, as it was ‘kin expensive (circa €500) even with the “Black Friday” reduction.

Case is always the expensive bit of a build.

Seems rather excessive when you can get some absolute beasts from China for half the price, and IME they are now VERY well made. Earlier years saw two to three month waiting times for delivery and when they arrived there was usually a defect. Now, stuff gets here within a month and is pretty much perfect. I have a MODU case on my 686 and it's a solid number.

The case is cheap. Having the modifications done adds about the same to the total price. Yes, I could do it myself, but it would not be as good.
I will have anti-rotation lugs for my speaker binding posts etc. There is €60 of printing. Transfers would have been more expensive. All the mounting holes are being drilled and tapped. I only have the power switch hole to drill. €25 for a 19mm hole seemed excessive, when I already have the tool. The others, I am happy with, based on the advice I received here.

It's very expensive to get the machining done, I understand that. And yes, it's a lot easier to get the stuff pre machined. Makes life very simple

The only things left to be gone is the bolting of the transformers to the “power tray”, and the installation of the mezzanine on some stand offs. Everything else will bolt in place.
Mechanically, it will be easy. Electrically, I need to sort out the harnesses. I will be investigating what I need over the weekend, and ordering all the plugs and cable to finish the build.

Expensive but stuff like pre drilling will avoid potential mistakes. That and the printing will mean the finished article will look very smart. I guess that's what you have to look at, should be worth it.

I totally agree. I have had printing done on the rear, which probably was not worth it. I did this to ensure if I ever sold it, there would be no issues for the new owner, as I am fitting RCA and XLR sockets. You can only use one at a time, and this is now going to be marked on the case.

It's all starting to fall into place. Toroidy have shipped the transcormers. They lied. A system error. Quite happy about that, as they have not turned up yet. I was getting worried.

Thanks. I saw this as an extra on the website.
Tom has confirmed that you need to order them separately.

Thoughts on using OCC cable for the signal wires? I was thinking it may be beneficial, but will it really make a big difference over the standard harness??

I am following this thread with interest. I’ve just ordered the boards myself and am going to have a crack at it too.
It’s a bit daunting but having spoken to Tom he thinks that as long as I get modushop to do the drilling then it’s just a case of turning a screwdriver to get the boards in place , then connecting point A to B with the wiring whilst following his detailed instructions.

Need to sort out the speaker output too. Seen some nice OCC for that as well.

The most daunting bit for me, apart from the cost, was building the Guardian 686, and you have to do it twice. The first seems to work ok. Still waiting for the second one to arrive. If you are going for it, then Modushop have a Black Friday sale on, but you will need to alter Tom’s CAD files, as they are done for Rev 1.0 of the boards, and not rev 1.1 which exists now.

Unfortunately all the boards have wiped out my budget this month so the case will have to wait . Tom said he is going to update the CAD files soon so it should be done by time I order. I might go for a 5U case so I can get the toroidy supreme and all the boards in there nicely without a shelf . If I go 4U I will use the antek one he recommends as it’s taller rather than wider so there is no space issues

My last Guardian 686 PCB has arrived in the post today. It’s avoided customs charges, for the time being....
Gives me something to do at the weekend.
