my second rule of amp design - the traffo shall be the size of a grapefruit.
Some may say that you can get away with a traffo the size of a Jaffa orange, those big ones with skin an inch thick that you only ever got in school canteens. Or even something smaller still. But it's crazy talk.

I think 800VA total should be ample, don’t you think?

Yeh, thats what in my monos, 2x 400va and 8x 22,000uf across the pair. More than sufficient.

I have the same capacitance ready for the PSU boards.

Toroidy Supreme Audio grade worth the extra for the shielding?

Just re-read the 686 info. Tom recommends 2x24 or 2x25V of between 350 to 500VA per channel.
I may look at getting a custom wound traffo of around 800VA with 4 x 24V output.
It should make packaging easier?

Progress Guardian 686 Power 686 T'other end of the completed Power 686. One more Power 686 to do, but I will do that tomorrow.

It seems that I do need two guardian 686s after all. The one above is configured for a dual mono single ended amp....

Fingers crossed that they will go to a good home, and I can get some Mod 686 boards ordered this month. I will need a mahoosive biscuit tin though.

The question is, 400VA or 500VA transformers? There is about €20 difference.
Surely 400VA is more than enough for one channel?

400 va is good for 400 watts, assuming 100% efficiency, which is impossible. 65% is typical real world, so its comfortably enough for 200 watts, more like 260, so its 30% overrated.

So, ideally suited to avoid clipping? My speakers dip to about 3 ohms. I

I asked Tom the question. For Max power, he recommends a 2x25VAC, 400VA Transformer per channel. A safe build, 2x22VAC, 250VA Transformer per channel - about 130W into 8 ohms. For the 2x24VAC, he recommends a 300VA transformer, so 400 will be ample.

He does very nice work. Just a thought.

Probably Toroidy Audio Grade. They are in Europe, so I avoid import tax etc.

The limits on clipping are the current delivery of the output devices and their output impedance, unless you have tiny traffos, adding more va cant improve beyond the limits of the output stage once you reach sufficient va.
With 6 paralleled output devices itll drive down to 2 ohms at more than sufficient volume. Certainly better than my '486' manage.

Just to put the record straight the 686 isn't 6 chips in parallel, it is two arms with 3 chips in parallel in each arm.
It is bridged amplifier meaning neither output terminal can be earthed.

Still better at driving low impedance loads than my bridged 2+2 per side

2 off Toroidy Audio Grade, 2 x 24VAC, 400VA have been ordered.
Now I need: A case A soft start All the connectors Misc. mounting hardware
Oh, and the most important/expensive part - the amp boards.
