I found Tungsrams to be a bit of a sleeping giant as far a valves go. Everyone goes for Teles at first look but Tungsrams are just as good ime, and cheaper. More dynamic I think, if that's what you want. Just taken delivery of Tungsram factory selected PCC88s with the red numbers on. Looking forwards to trying them out 🙂 Although not for a BB3, the first pre amp valve I purchased for my amp was a Tungsram (Hungary) ECC 83.

I've a 1957 Berlin TFK 83 in, payed £35 delivered December last year. Also payed £106 delivered for a quad of NOS TFK 88s 2 weeks later. Bought a pair of NOS 88s a month back and cost me £85, prices have gone daft now.

wow! I was in my BB3 replacing R11P as Oli advised, and while I was in there I had a quick look at my ECC83. Looks like it is a silver plate foil getter version. Is this a good thing? It sounds great.

What I have found though is this:
In one of the pictures, I can see a 0 6, which would mean May 1960?

Couple of questions. Do the valves in V1 and V3 have to be matched or can different valves be used in each?
Also Is there any way to judge whether ‘NOS’ really is, or do you just have to take the seller’s word for it/decide whether you believe them based on the pictures. Almost every valve on eBay seems to say ‘NOS’ and somehow I doubt they all are!
Cheers Dan

dt79 what valve make specifically are you after? I have a pair of NOS PCC88 TFKs here and a pair of used (but still good) TFK 83s that I doubt I'll use, additionally if the BBu is as kickass as has been intimated then I'll also have a 2nd pair of 88s and a 1957 TFK 83 that are currently in my BB3 going spare.

Thank you. I have a TFK ECC83 in V2 and 2* Siemens PCC88 in V1&3. I would like to try TFK or Tungsram in V1 and 3. I’d seen a single Tungsram PCC88 on ebay for a reasonable price so that was what got me thinking. Very interested in a pair of NOS TFK PCC88s…

Think the 189s are not as popular, I got it off ebay from a guy in Austria, ha had other valves at the time but nothing listed atm. 88s I got from a Jukebox specialist Jukedoc, in Germany. Yep, sadly I have a Jukebox, with a valve amp too!

Hi Ollie, Is there any other type of valve that can be used in either V1 or V3, or does is have to be PCC88? If you were going to experiment with a single valve, which position would you prioritise?

V1 responds well to valve changes, so get a decent PCC88 for there. The guys here know their onions, so they can point you in the right direction.
