Today is a sad day. I think my Tungsram ECC83 foil getter has popped it’s clogs…. It was a lovely sounding valve as well. Nooooooooo

I am. It 100% sure. I got noise on the RH channel, it got worse, so I turned the BB3 off, swapped out all of the valves, fired it up and it sounded good. Just wondering if this is the ECC83 that caused it, or something else. I could swap it back in, and see what happens, but I have asked a very knowledgeable chap about this. I am in no rush, as I have plenty of spares, just none quite the same as the foil getter….

I have a spare one from Drew if it’s of interest.

A very kind offer…. Thank you. They are hard to find, so you would probably be better keeping it. I have a few other high quality valves I can fit, so it is not the end of the world.
I need to investigate further.
One thing to note is that the BB3 sounds really good in MM mode. I have an SAE1000LT fitted at the moment, and I am in no rush to replace it.

After having contacted our resident vale guru, and having followed his advice, I am happy to report that all is well…

I was being cautious, but it is clear I still have a lot to learn regarding these valve thingies…

Oooooh, nice valve. They are not bad at all. What’s the general consensus on the best valve combo for the BB3 Generally a trio of TFKs, bit I have an Radio technique ECC83 and 2x Tesla PCC88'S and that's pretty much on the money. I like Siemens PCC88's though. Very nice and clean. A Tungsram I borrowed of Drew was epic, but mega money.

A Tungsram Foil getter by any chance? Sounds awesome with Tungsram PCC88 fitted as well. I am trying to find some RT PCC88.
Best valve combo? No idea. Everything I have tried sounds great…

Is the Mazda PCC88 likely to be made by Radiotechnique? I believe that the ECC83 is.

Well after a few months experimenting with valve combos I have decided my preferred combo is Tesla E83CC plus Tungsram PCC88s
Others tried are
PCC88s from , Telefunken , Tesla, Ei, Mullard and Siemens.
Soviet 6n2p-ev great value for money
PCC189 from Telefunken
ECC83s from Ei, Brimar, Mullard and Tungsram
Close runners- Tesla E83cc beats Tungsram foil getter for detail and seperation, Tungsram adds nice dynamics but ultimately I preferred the greater clarity. .
Tungsram PCC88s beat the Telefunkens, very similar but slightly more presence. A good cheaper alternative to Telefunkens. 🙂

Stop it now, I use one 12ax7 in my amplifier. After spending €200 on HiFi and a bit more on another hobby, I won’t be buying anything else HiFi this year….

Cost…. 6 E88CC to change. And less people will probably buy one.
