Ok so I had a go at the tonearm today, first drilled out the retaining pin witha 2mm drill biat and Dremel. The hardest part was starting off such a small accurate hole on a small surface area . Managed to do it by holding the Dremel very tightly. The plastic collar slides down , held in place by a small spring clip.

So next I heated the barrel with my hot air gun, apparently the plastic barrel holding the wire slots is held in by some glue. If you heat the barrel and then slot in the headshell and rotate (gently!) it comes free and you can then prise out the plastic part.

Close up of wiring arrangement. I reamed the pin hole out a bit more to get rid of some of the old retaining pin material.

Well I'm quite pleased with how things went there as apparently thats the part that can go wrong. Now i need to clean up the arm chrome etc and think about the rewire more seriously🙂 I might wet and dry and then respray the arm another colour. The back end's chrome is fine so I'll leave that.

Have you got the spare parts to repair the arm ? Yes , but some have seen better days! The arm piller has been previous glued but comme apart again. I'm thinking about trying Araldite , but if it is effectively useing the old glue for purchase it's not going be as strong or rigid I guess. I'll try it and see but I suspect I'll be better off getting a whole one.

1st coat of primer and new v blocks fitted. I have some tonearm wire too, nothing too fancy but teflon coated.

Ok so I've been reading about stackwd platters, has anyone got any experience of them at all?
Any comments welcome, I have the offer to buy another platter at a reasonable price.

I tried it and didn't notice any discernible difference apart from it looked good. But, a lot of people reckon they can hear a difference and the platters always sell well if it doesn't work for you so nothing to lose.

Thanks I might get the extra platter as I can sell on. Then I can give it a go. Cheers

So after 3 coats of primer 4 of paint and 3 of lacquer its come out ok. A couple of blemishes here and there but hopefully not where they can be seen once fitted! Next job to rewire, I'm thinking about foam filling the arm tube while I'm about it too.

Have a look at Tangram tables aka David W Harris. Good all round Lenco egg and he does good V Blocks and a rather interesting bearing update which works - and would be essential for a stacked platter rig trying to rotate on a certainly part worn dimpled plastic film original thrust pad. The improvement to a custom B55/GL69 I've been using recently was palpable and run-down time dramatically increased (works better with the Peek pad on the 75 bearing I gather as the smaller 69/72 needs some further 'adjustment' of running height.
Not sure a double mass platter would be a cure-all for lenco drive noise but one that can work, is to reduce the voltage feeding the motor by 10% or so. The slightly reduced torque on a single massy Lenco platter shouldn't make one jot of sonic musical or pitch difference on a sub 2g tracking cartridge, but the remaining motor vibration after a damned good service does seem reduced (it's an idler deck, so you'll never have perfect silence from it as you do a good direct drive).
