I've just now bought a pair of Matsushita 12ax7 to try. All good fun. They should be good, I use Matsushita 7DJ8s in my phono stage and I've also had them in the Herron Audio VTSP-2a Pre. Kevin Deal of Upscale Audio rates the 7DJ8s so hopefully the 12ax7s be as good

Yes, it was the Kevin Deal spiel that put me on to the brand.
Fingers crossed for a good result!

You need to ask 'where did you get the 12AX7's' then you won't be confused.

Very true, they're pcc88. It's just that Kevin Deal really rates the Matsushita version, so maybe their 12ax7 will be good, too.
There are some forum comments findable with a search engine which call Matsushita valves in general 'sleepers'.
So I thought I'd give their 12ax7 a try when a pair came up on UK ebay.
Are you less confused now?

I'm currently running with TAD 12ax7 and 12au7, but I've a pair of Brimar 12au7 on order. The Brimar 12au7 pair have arrived and to my surprise have shown the TADs a clean pair of heels. More lucid, they've deconvolved the sound picture, noticeably improving the focus. Especially when the music gets more complex I can hear more of what's happening. They just sound more natural to me. The TADs are good, no doubt about that, but I like the Brimar even more. Suitably impressed I scuttled off to ebay yesterday only to find a pair of Brimar 12ax7 on auction and ending a few hours later. They were posted to me this morning. TAD and Brimar have been my 'go to' valves for years. They always seem to suit me. Sometimes I prefer one, sometimes the other. Yes, there's also a pair of Matsushita 12ax7 on the way. Still, it's nice to have choices.
