No, you need to buy more amps! 🤣 Hahahaha, Id need them all powered up simultaneously so I don't have to have warm up time between tracks lol

Some (very well heeled) folks do have multiple systems to address this problem.
My system is entirely tuned to classical, everything else just has to take its chances. Having said that, rock and electronica does sound very decent, but undoubtedly lacks the final nuances that you would probably look for.

Yes, I am realising as I have continued to progress my system, and hob-nob with some wealthier types, that they either have multiple systems or multiple pre & amplifier types to swap in and out. It's partly what put me onto trying Digital with Valves and their success with those kind of combinations has again highlighted that vinyl does seem to be very much in danger of falling by the wayside. Not here, as I'm addicted to the black plastic discs, but the sound I was getting last night has only been equalled by vinyl in my system. I'd have sworn blind that the DAC had been changed lol I am definitely now going to probably look into developing the Digital side a little more.

I just did a reccy on the prices of my then stereo in 1988/89 compared to the current prices and nearly fainted. ARC preamp at £6500 today and Genesis Mono amps at £6750pr, turntable system at £9k or so at today's prices and I reckon a PDM1mk2 dac on its own would be around £1300 in today's money. Since KT120's are the current rave, can you try an Icon Audio amp, one with coppery top plate? I think it was a Stereo 60 and I remember the Stereo 40 were pretty good as well (not sure which version but they looked as pictured on their site - iconaudio.com/integrated-amplifiersI think they're basically an online supplier now but that may have benefits for buyers as there's hopefully no dealer margin with any luck.

Unless they do a Power amp, they won't be on my radar. I'll have a look through the range

They do make power amps but not sure how they equate to the ones I've heard. Good luck hunting anyway as I suspect it's an itch you will need to scratch regularly

It could be the answer to an "all in one" solution as the 686 on the vinyl with the valve phono make sweet sweet music We will see

I have an MF X-10D here. As supplied and as I used to sell them, under the guise of 'impedance matching,' it made the then popular Marantz CD63-SE KI Signature sound less scrappy and 'warmer.' It did the same with my motley collection of sources. It's fairly interesting for a 12VAC supplied box but that's another story. Rock Grotto do an upgrade kit for this thing - beefed up caps and a couple of nice? Russian valves. Each step (components and then valve change) made the X-10D basically disappear further from the sonic picture, so yeah, these were upgrades, but basically making the addition of this thing redundant as it didn't change or 'improve' the sound any more... Does the above make any sense at all? I fondly remember the X-DAC (cylindrical original) but no idea how it would stack up today. Both beneffitted from a larger 12VAC transformer (I think I made a little box with a 30VA potted toroid). I got the thing down to see if it still worked after ten years in storage and it happily does, but again, little insertion loss and little to no 'added warmth' that I could hear. Sorry for thread crap. As you were fellas

I had one here for a bit...I remember it being quite effective too. Hence the reasoning of using one now. This one will be fully valve though, no wall warts.

The X-10D was fully valve in the audio circuit I believe. The transistors were to bump up the 12V to the HT lines (famous last words here, sorry if I have it wrong).

PrimaLuna KT88, TAD 12AX/AU7
Managed a couple of hours of this combo over the weekend and I think it's my preferred combo. Well, I know it is.
The KT88 seem less constricted with the TAD valves in play, which says to me that the issue is/was the PL input valves. I have a pair of Genalex Gold Lion 12AX7 on the way for a brief trial which is very nice. This should give me an idea of where the TAD sit in the valve world, or the GL for that matter.
Lots of offers of valves to loan and try, which I hadn't expected to be honest. Especially as I only posted about the amp here (AA) and yet the offers are coming from members of multiple forums. Surely then they are reading the Audio Addicts Forum!....SIGN UP! lol
So yes, the KT88 have a tighter, cleaner sound but I think the TAD compliment are responsible for bringing the 3D image that I have found so addictive over the last few days.
Ocean Colour Scene's - "Here in my Heart" gave me chills....it was unlike I have heard it before. So much emotion came from the recording. Obviously, the valve effect has exactly this effect on most material, but it's so addictive and yes, I am happy to say that I have completely forgotten about forensic listening and have just been playing music for the enjoyment of the music itself.
The PL5 gets under your skin and this valve combo is probably a great compromise of all the combinations I have tried.
The wife and I sat in the listening room for an hour or two over the past week or so, chatting about various married life subjects. Obviously the music is playing at quite a low level to do this, yet I notice her foot tapping on a couple of occasions and point it out. She just laughs and says "well it sounds good doesn't it?"
Yes, it sounds good.

Yes, ime the TAD input valves do the 3D thing like no others I have tried.
As luck would have it, I've not tried kt88, ever! Which is a strange omission and one I'd like to rectify in my PL5.
Have you tried the TAD EL34 quad that I sent? I think they may sit between the KT120 and the KT88.

I didn't like TAD that much they lasted less a week in my system. I've not experimented with 6550 I love tung sol valves. I really rate their 6sl7gt variants. I've been thinking about a quad of new replica 6550s for some time. I'd probably be trying those next in my amp.

Just plumbed these in...... Crikey....they have some bottom end on them. The bloody doors are rattling lol. However, that's not uncommon here and a couple of notches back on the Preamp and it's far more controlled. Truth be told, I think the gain may be a bit higher with them. So, sonically they are bloody marvelous. Polar opposite of that ultralinear Tung-Sol 12AX7 Sound. They are rich, full bodied and superbly textured.... these are right up my alley. Thicker around the midband and one might say they have less HF extension but they'd be wrong, they are just fatter sounding. Very detailed though. No mush, mud or smearing. Construction wise, these are thick glass. Very heavy in comparison to the GE valve and they make the TAD feel very lightweight in the hand. They are also slightly bigger. More listening to come but so far, these are very good. I paid £50 for 2, which in this age of valve prices seems like a bargain. These are only initial impressions, so my feelings may change.

I don't think the GL are quite as holographic at the minute, but they are brand new so they need a bit of time to open up I think.

Current combination: 4x PrimaLuna KT88, 2x TAD 12AU7, 2x Gold Lion ECC88
The current combination has a great mix of insight, detail and fatness.
Listening to Muddy Waters - Folk Singer, and it's really expansive, soulful and clean. The vocals are soaring but there is no hint of harshness. What i think i am getting now is a bit of that richness i got from Jerry's 120s but with the taut control and incisiveness of the KT88. I am very pleased with combination, and 1 hour into it and the valves have opened up a bit. These are bloody good valves. I can see these making there way into my phonostage.
The great thing so far is that this is the closest i think that digital has ever got (in my system) to crossing that boundary into Analogue sound. The soul, the feel and the body is very reminiscent of the Vinyl. On the good recordings this setup is as good as anything i have heard here and if i could recommend this sound to anyone looking to leave vinyl and go digital only. I am serious.
I can hear the neighbouring strings making minute sounds as he plays the guitar, so there is absolutely no concern from me about detail, transients and nuances. It is easily good enough to be lived with. Obviously, the real test will be when the 686 goes back in.

Obviously, the real test will be when the 686 goes back in. Yes, I was wondering about that. Although according to another thread here, £1700 is a bargain for a used, built Neurochrome and my PL5 with great valves was more than £1k cheaper than that. 'S'gotta be a great value!

Well, I went for the EL34 valves and for me, they do what Jerry says and sit somewhere right in the middle of the KT88 and KT120, but i must admit to preferring either the 120's or the 88's. A nicely presented sound but i pined for the 88's. I decided to return to base and plumb the PrimaLuna valves back in. Currently listening to the PLKT88', PL12AU7/AX7 Rather unsurprisingly, that constricted feel came back but after about 30 mins or so, the sound did open out a little. So far, the Gold Lion 12AX7, TAD12AU7 and PL KT88 has been the combination i have enjoyed the most i think. Although i would happily fill this amp with TAD valves and not worry about it at all. jandl100 let me know where to return your valves to, and i'll get them back to you next week. I must admit, the fear of breaking one of these beauties had loomed over me lol. I am super grateful for the loan. It's been enlightening.

Next is to find a solid state amp *that measures properly* but doesn't strip the music out in the process, as it's easy to make a nice sounding amp that's actually loads of harmonics added in as many valve amps do.
Try Hegel next - and don't dismiss it because they're 'only' an integrated amp. Shorter signal paths remember..... They have digital inputs too (which I didn't get the chance to try) so worth a good looking at and hopefully listening too. The baby amp at £2200 is a corker I reckon.

I had a Hegel H90 and couldn't live with it. A definite bit of brightness (which made the decision to move it on easy) but not particularly inspiring in other ways, either. Quite good, apart from the brightness, but not overly noteworthy imo.
The Benchmark power amp is said to be excellent by someone I know who has been going a bit crazy recently demoing power amps (up to £20k). He says it is almost as good as the Temple Audio Monoblocks (with Supercharger PSUs) which I now also have on his recommendation.

The 120 I heard wasn't at all bright, but I suspect it needs a decent source as second rate sources may well make it 'flat' and uninspiring. Loads of 3-D too and so musical/tuneful.. My dealer pal feels the Rega Aethos has more beef to it but I don't need that here and as listening was secondary to my being there for work, I wasn't able to do any box swapping. Fascinating afternoon and very enjoyable as I thought I'd forgotten what a good sound was. (The new Harbeth XD's are also very much improved over previous incarnations having lost the murky over-safe tones they used to have, but that's not for here or this thread). So many domestic 'porty' speakers just boom away and sound off at low frequencies, so an amp able to tame or control it is a good thing I feel. I like kick drums to KICK, not wallow around uncontrollably and sadly, not everyone can accommodate large dominating speakers with a naturally low distortion and taut bass as I suspect Jerry's speakers have. Biggie, I know you have the Neurochrome, yet you're currently raving over a second rate valve amp with huge colouration and added distortion/character and hf ringing if tests are to be relied upon - the smaller PL integrated in silver finish looked shite in comparison with some more serious E.A.R's it was displayed with - maybe it should have been a black or grey one? I was trying to suggest when the need for the next new thing comes along, that you try to get a listen to Hegel, as I found it just as tuneful as any valve amp I've heard at this venue (Icon, Pathos, Croft old and new, Quad old and new, Croft preamp(new) and Quad (old) but sadly, his old Radfords aren't safe to use until a rebuild). For a non-Quad solid state amp to do this for me was a shock frankly. I forgot the utterly beguiling EAR V12 amp - madness but so clear with no stodge.
Such a crying shame that E.A.R amps are almost double the price in the UK they should be and all to appeal to the far eastern high end audio-jewellery market where a higher price is everything.

I suspect you need to have a listen to a PL5 to hear how good it actually sounds, Dave. ... Perhaps suitably hidden to avoid expectation bias. Neither Oli nor I are short of experience when it comes to amps, and we both think it a very capable performer. Sometimes measurements can only get you so far, then you have to rely on your ears as ultimately that's all that really matters. I've no plans to move mine on and regard it as my final valve amp.
