Okay, I have made a deal with myself. If and when I get the spring cleaning finished I will buy it as a reward. The cleaning is a big job though. Hercules would be happy to swap with me. I'm covering every square inch meticulously. I started at the front of the house and am working backwards. So far I'm about 10 feet in and that's taken about 6 hours over several weeks. I should probably take fewer tea breaks. Hahahaha, fair play though. A clean and tidy listening space always sounds better.

Very true.
I did the upstairs last year, my god that was a job. One of those jobs that's so big you think it's impossible. But it got done, although it took many, many hours. My problem is I have to do it 100% or nothing. I do stuff like using baby wipes to clean the light fittings, that sort of obsessive thing.

Resistance is futile. Good luck with the cleaning.

Enough cleaning for today. It's too warm. Had a cold shower (couldn't be arsed to wait for the water to heat up) and now listening to my HDCD 'Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere'.
Quite glad I only got as far as the basket with that DAC as this really sounds great, difficult to fault it and it's a long way from being any sort of 'audiophile' recording.

even if it wasn't you've got the parametric EQ to sort it out....I might have a shop around. New one is out now so the older one might be reduced a bit to clear. Must admit I find this very amusing - for decades us audiophools sneered at kit with "tone controls" on - now it's accepted and even regarded as essential by many!

Ah but we're doing it all in the 'digital domain' now so that's okay.
I remember when no self-respecting enthusiast would go within a mile of digital - myself included. Times change.
Tone controls were mostly crap anyway, they never really sorted the problem or even put a sticking plaster on it a lot of the time. The loudness button was more useful but that was even more reviled!

Anyway good job I didn't buy the ADI earlier on as summat else has come up which I really wanted and which I'd have had to think about if I'd already shelled out the thick end of a grand earlier in the day.

My 4 piece Black Tulip collection started off with a preamp. Makes sense for that to be Macca's next move.

What other bits did you have Jerry? Tuner and tape deck? The digital timer seems to be the most difficult part to find, along with the mounting rack.

2 power amps, the earlier preamp and a tuner. I almost bought the cassette deck just for the hell of it (it looks great!), but I'm not a 'completist' by nature and sanity prevailed. The tuner came free with the smaller power amp, I never tried it.
The pre had a very endearing sq, if not that transparent or fast. Flawed though it was it made me want to investigate further - and the bigger power amp was most impressive indeed (as you have found). I'm told a cap refresh on the pre does wonders for it in terms of cleaning up the sound. Whether or not I would like it as much I have no idea! As original it was a very pleasant listen in a pipe and slippers kind of way.

This one has had the capacitors changed already, by Alan. Plus the gain has been lowered.
It's all just for the A/V system so absolute sound quality isn't a priority. All I ask from an A/V system is that I can hear the dialogue clearly and without straining. Something a lot of them fail to achieve.
I want at least one of either the tuner or the digital timer because they have the cool red LED displays which are essential to the look of the whole thing. It's all about the look. I would probably never actually use either of them.

Ah, looks like it's my old pre! Alan bought mine iirc.

Could well be, although I'm not buying it off Alan. It's probably had a dozen owners since new!
Shame there was no CD player, I don't know if Philips even did a CD player with rack mounts that might be a visual match?
