Here you go James John DeVore explains why you need a Krell on those Hecos Like I said WEEKS AGO.....they need more power. The Krells aren't the answer for Jim, I know he wouldn't like the 50 you have, and the 100 paints everything with the same brush. A KSA50 MK2 would be a decent start but a beast like the Luxman Luxkit 504 would be epic too.

We compared that Luxman to the 50S at Penkridge and the 50S was better. Not massively but it really was.
I think Jim would like the 100 - I get the impression he's an emotions man not a forensics man and the 100 delivers on that side, plus it is so sonorous and effortless.
Not heard an original 50 or the mark 2 version but from what I have read their character is very similar to the 100. The 'S' series were a bit of a departure for Krell and were not generally popular with those who were used to the original mk1 and mk2 amps.

I think Jim would be happier with a more powerful version of what he already has.

Yes I think the KSA100 would be more my bag.

There was a 100 up for sale on a few of the forums for a while but I think Ali's had it. A lot of amplifier for the money.

I have contacted Glenn to see what he can do for me with a special 7R. If not I might have the impedance reduce on my 25R preamp and consider a Neurochrome 686.

Yeah matching the pre-power bit is essential. These days I just use the DAC straight into the power amp. Control volume in the digital domain. No point stringing other stuff in the way if you don't need it. Doesn't work if you want analogue source too ofc.

SHOCK HORROR!!!!
I decided this afternoon to listen to a bit of internet Radio 3 on my system so I hooked up my Mackbook Pro via a Monster cable through a line input. Interet digital radio is a bit low rez and so bit thin but perfectly acceptable sounds floated from my speaker especially if you like the nerdy early music show.
So whilst I had my laptop hooked up i decided to pop on a bit of digital via Audirvana. OMG!!!
I have a select amount of reference material on there and it is all calibrated and delivered by the latest version of Audirvana via my headphone jack into the linestage on my Croft preamp.
Simply what I heard has beaten my vinyl system!!! What the f*^k is going on. I can A-B stuff i have on vinyl and most material was bettered via my digital version on my laptop. This is alarming since it is going through the DAC on my laptop unless Audirvana magically does some pre processing. The laptop now has all my digital on a SSD drive and it runs on battery when connected to my system.
The sound was very very clean, detailed, dynamic and natural sounding. Very undigital.
I think my cartridge must be bust or something is up with the phono stage. I am still shaking my head! Hahahahahaha oh dear... This is what I like to call the "Digital awakening"

This why I don't get involved with digital to any great degree!

I think my cartridge must be bust or something is up with the phono stage. I am still shaking my head! The surprise is that you are getting these results through the laptop dac. However.. in a way it shouldnβt be a surprise. Digital is developing rapidly. Iβm a big fan of Audirvana. I run mine 24/7 on a Mac mini. It will bypass/shutdown all other operations whilst itβs on. So you no longer have the βnoiseβ/ interference that you used to get. In addition they have added the ability to play upnp from it- so all my raspberry pi set ups all play Audirvana, which is βtransmittingβ Qobuz. I was going to respond to your blog before about looking at FM tuners I used to run a Linn Kremlin using a Galaxy aerial. Great sound... no it was outstanding. However now the bbc have 320k transmission.. I canβt tell much difference between these broadcasts and the FM ones... plus you can get hall the hires 320k transmissions from all over the world. So.. add into the mix using an Allo USbridge/ linear ps (a raspberry pi on steroids) driving a pecan pi dac and it seriously challenges my SP10.

As you now Steve I did used to run the RPi with ALLo Boss DAC and really liked it but I was shocked to hear how good the digital was straight off my laptop. I maybe going down the Pecan Pi route or beyound in the near future!

But I know from Oli experience it sounds stunning with his digital set up.

Mind you my son had commandeered it for a while. The only time I get down there now is in those hours of the morning when I canβt sleep!! The Allo USbridge replaces the Rpi and the Pecan pi replaces the Allo boss. Different league.

I'll offer 1/2 the price you told your wife the vinyl setup cost, just to take it off your hands and give you a wee start on the digital fund π π

Yes I think I may have to upgrade my vinyl system? Any news from Glenn yet about the 7R possibilities? Not heard anything from him yet. To be honest I may be slipping down the Neurochrome 686 route as I don't think even a 7R has enough muscle to drive my new speakers properly!

It also took another leap in performance when I plumbed it into an Allo USbridge ( and added linear power supplies to both).. replacing the pi.

Yes thanks Steve but the are the 7 monos. I would need at least the 7R mono to do some justice to the Hecos
