visited MIL for first time in several weeks . we have had an incredible game with the door closer on the front door to her flat in a sheltered accommodation . when we bought it i took off the door closer .Then i bought an easier one that didnt seem to work . Then the fire people said it needed a different one , its so stiff this elderly lady has to push backwards to get through door and getting out takes a fair bit of strength . Right PITB !!!!

You can adjust many of them, I used to do that at the care home I worked in. There's usually adjustment on the spring mechanism, sometimes it's external but can also be internal and needs the cover off. I found out how by looking on YouTube at the ones we had fitted. Might be worth a look, just have to watch and not adjust too light or suction effect from a window open or draught from somewhere can prevent them from closing 100%

Yes they have spent a long time adjusting them , problem is the fire officer wants one thing and i want another ...thanks though Start going down the risk assessment route, see if he'll budge if you state that she can't get out of her flat if there's a fire in there. Her flat is a bigger risk than the corridor, he'll no doubt say that if she did have a fire in her flat it'll compromise the corridor, but that should be compartmented by the Fire Doors in the corridor, I know there'll be other flats within that part of the corridor, if he does then just hit him with the fact that he doesn't seemed bothered that she'll possibly die because she can't get out. The door shouldn't be as stiff that she can't open it, and it should still shut properly even with the spring adjusted. Trust me I've been there, and I've been on both sides (ex Fire Service) Make sure the door isn't a tight fit and that's stopping it closing easily, the lock might be stopping it, the carpet? Intumescent strip too stiff? etc

So having found the dead rat under the floorboards, it’s now all out war. Defcon one triggered, with rat-cam, baited traps and we will terminate with extreme prejudice

So during the week we started to notice a ‘smell’ in the hall. That ‘death’ smell as the rat man called it. Fortunately for me we have just one floorboard in the hall that has been cut and screwed down years ago. And especially fortunate that the rat had decided to die underneath this. If it had been elsewhere it would have been a nightmare to find yet alone extract. Following sound advice from a local pest control guy we have found the likely access point (a broken air brick). So all meshed up now and he also advised a webcam just in case they were tunnelling in. Amazing bit of inexpensive kit www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07QLR94S1?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Today, the same as yesterday, I have been farting like a dog. Don't know what I've eaten that's turned my guts bad, but am now at the point where I don't want to be in the same room as my arse.

Just love flashing lights , sadly never really know what they mean . My network switch flashes like a Christmas tree bu never sure if this is good or bad . Internet keeps working the music keeps playing so will just leave it alone . Any problems turn it off leave for thirty seconds and turn it back on again then let self diagnostic and everything works again .

I hate flashing lights on audio equipment, I don't even like all the lights on my Soekris, flashing or not. I see now Chris as got himself in a panic over what colour light is coming on, and you yourself haven't got the foggiest what they all mean on your clocks. KISS

Our rat hadn’t been dead that long.. but I’ll never get that smell of of my memory.. and having to pick the bastard up. Did it like you would with dog poo, except with a garden rubble bag. And a blessing the bin men were only 5 mins from collection. Good recommendation about the webcam though. £23 well spent. So far no further signs so at least we haven’t got an infestation.

Feckin rats have been driving me nuts for years, although since I have used steel mesh on the suspected entry points have had none inside the house for a long while now. I still put Big Cheese blocks down underneath the house and they are still being taken, hopefully back to the nest. I suspect they are entering through the waste water outlet as there is a gap between several inch and a half pipes going into the open end. which is impossible to fully seal off.

I had a rat that decided to take up residence in the walls, beneath the kitchen units, in the loft etc. Could hear it all over the place. The main problem was it was so bloody noisy.
It was too clever for the traps that we put down. I had the feeling that we were trying to outsmart something that was smarter than us. Didn't want to put poison down in case one of our cats found the poisoned body. Eventually one of the cats caught it, which saved at least one pouch of cat food.
After this we stopped putting bird food out in the feeders, the rats seemed to move on after that.

'kin hate rats and mice! seriously, horrid things! would rather deal with creepy crawly, spiders any day. I remember a guy sayin to me years back, that you know when you've got rats cause they are noisy and yes, I've heard folk say THE SMELL of a dead one is something you'll just never forget, nothing like it. I've also heard that that smell attracts other rats - please!

Weather was good so took the bike out this afternoon - fitted a brake lever guard ready for my track day and wanted to make sure everything was good Stopped off at the local bikers pub - jeez it was fuller than a full thing Looks like a decent turnout for time of year. What pub is that then? West Yorkshire isn't a million miles from me (Chorley, Lancs.) We used to get up to Hawes quite often. I have one or two things to do to get the Fireblade on the road: 1. Have a real butch out of the garage so that the bike can come back home (currently in next door's garage). 2. Buy a new battery 3. Get MOT 4. Get taxed 5. Lose twenty pounds so I can fit into me leathers Renewed the insurance today (Bennetts again). Was £150 last year, £140 this time. I'm happy with that.

Not bad at all Phil. When I bought the bike back in 2006 (3 years old then) fully comp was about £800, and was all but uninsurable without proper alarm/immobiliser. I expect current models are a bigger target for thieves. Also I may be in a post code that insurers like.
The way insurers calculate can be hard to fathom - many years ago I had a Mk. 2 Golf GTI 16v, and although it was group 15 insurance at the time compared to the 8v Golf's group 14, mine was actually cheaper to insure. I read in a motoring magazine that the more expensive 16v was more often driven by professional types like doctors, who more likely cared for their cars, while the 8v ones were more likely owned by boy racer types. It was probably just to wind up owners, and written by Jeremy bloody Clarkson.
