I suppose if your happy to do without the bass frequencies and the high frequencies they'd be fine. He's not the first person to stick an 8 inch driver with a whizzer cone into a plank of wood and call it done. Impressive for something so simple but put it next to a proper speaker and you hear what's missing right away. Been there and done that.
Don't know what the price is but I bet you could make your own for less.

Well for all of you who are trying to sort out speakers/in two minds what to buy I've come across these, not only that you can even use a 2 watt amplifier with them Joking aside I think they sound pretty good and you may also get links to better/larger speakers on the right hand side by the same person, also worth a listen. Decware (who made this vid) make the WORST Phonostage I have ever heard. The visuals were questionable, the sound was shocking. It was before I decided to measure everything I get here Phonostage wise so don't have a set of results to back up my opinion, but I still remember thinking it was broken.. Muddy, no HF extension at all....NONE. like it had been dispelled from the design all together. Bass was bloated and booming all over the place. Utterly terrible. It was in the black moulded config: www.decware.com/newsite/ZP3.htm*shudders*

I have to say I did not know you could buy a 8" full range speaker for less than $40, and Visaton are a brand I have heard of so assume they are decent. I also thought Decware amps to have quite a good reputation on what I've read.

The thing with full range drivers is that they are not actually full range at all, no such thing exists in practice. But you can get good results depending on the implementation. Back in about '93 I bought a pair of Lowther Acousta. They were dreadful but I sold the drive units at a profit and bought some Audax full range units (which from memory were about £40 each back then so decent units). I fitted those to the Acousta cabs - massive upgrade. I sold them to a DJ who used them as his PA system and gigged them all over the country. The drivers were 98dB sensitivity and in a fridge-size front loaded horn cab you could get very high levels cleanly. He told me that he would often get punters asking about the speakers and complimenting the sound quality. Anyway my point is that you can get good results with such drivers, but doing what Decware have done and just sticking them in a small open baffle is really not the way to go IMO. I still have a third Acousta cab that I got thrown in with the other two except that has been cut out to take a 12 inch bass unit to act as a subwoofer. Going to get around to implementing that at some point.

Maybe you will have time next year, although I would think your Focal's give enough bass without any help. On the plus, side if you made a sub ,it would give you the option for a nice pair of stand mounts.

The Focals do give just enough bass to be satisfying but on some music with synthesiser bass I notice that they don't go as low as the Celestion A2s I used to have.
Then there's the IMF TLS 50 that sound like the bass player has set up his 4x12 cab in your room and is playing along. Nothing IME comes close to a big transmission line for doing real bass. And that's from an 8 inch driver.
