You know what i see a lot on Forum is people comparing vintage with new items. People cannot help themselves. I get in the middle of it all the time.. Really winds me up beyond belief.. You buy Vintage Hi-Fi for the same reason as you buy anything vintage be it cars or Bikes I like the vintage sound but most important the Aesthetic Design.. To compare sound of old to new is just so redicul'arse Even though ive just written the above some donk wont be able to help himself.

Why is it ridiculous? What's wrong with comparing stuff?

Well some of it was, but yeah I agree it's just ignorance - and naivety in believing the hype about new being better and advances in technology and that. But if someone wants to believe then there's no chance of convincing them otherwise so why bother?
I put together a full 1970s set up a few years back, Technics SL1200 - Nagaoka MP50 - Harmon Kardon HK930 and Akai SW175. It did sound properly authentic, especially with some seventies-sounding music on like Doobie Brothers and Isaac Hayes.

I like a modern set up with my Headphones for serious listening but i prefer a vintage system for casual speaker listening. With headphones system you do not have to look at the ugly modern Sh#t, with the vintage you get a kick out of the look & design as well as the sound.
When i say vintage im referring to 60's/70's.. I always went for the classic British amps but they were so unreliable, But vintage British Product would not be British if otherwise . I ended up living with Japanese gear.

Will 1980s kit ever be vintage? '90s nostalgia is everywhere these days. Remember the heady times of Britpop, Cool Britannia, the Spice Girls? Me neither, I was too busy working and bringing up children.

Will 1980s kit ever be vintage? I doubt it ever will to our generation. It would be classifying ourselves as vintage. Noughties reaching their forties will view it so, I reckon.

The last half decent decade IMO.

After the 80's Styles finished IMHO. It was just a matter of going around in circles from then on. I class vintage within Hi-Fi as pre CD

I agree the 1980s stuff will never be 'vintage'.
When I started in 1987 fifties and sixties kit was vintage and 70s stuff was just 'old'. Now 70s has moved to vintage along with 50s and 60s but can't ever see the 1980s stuff as vintage.
And you're right there was only those eras as far as styling was concerned. 1990s and onwards it was just re-hashing one of those eras. Badly, usually.

One thing that bugs me is new Jeans made to look 70's with flares. They always make them with modern style front pockets instead of front & back patch pockets. But i suppose the word 'RETRO' is usually marked up which is something that is made to look like it is from the Era but not from the era cos then it would be 'VINTAGE'

It’s nice to have someone else who gets the fact that looks and design matter.

One of the reasons i love 60's/70's Hi-Fi. The Aesthetic designs are timeless. Just utter tripe these days.

décor - 1970s, hi-fi style - 1970s and 1980s.
Clothes - 1970s, 1980s. I have a collection of 1980s Tacchini tracksuit tops.

décor - 1970s, hi-fi style - 1970s and 1980s. A couple types of Decor style in the 70's.. I like the Space 1999: White/Chrome space age look. Not the all teak whats left over from the mid 60's look.

Fashion wise all ok from the 20's to the eighties. Nothing since. Baseball caps ,sports gear and LA riot pants saw to that. Shooting an Englishman over 16 caught wearing shorts or a baseball cap should be mandatory.

My great grandfather used to shoot any Englishman with his Mauser, that he spotted in the veld wearing a Khaki uniform and a Pith Helmet. Good shot and a good man my great granddaddy.
