Any good or another Sh#t Schiit?
See youtube vid...
Couple of points in the video. The inverted bearing. Is it lubed in any way? The platter once knocked (!) onto the bearing 'hub' goes up and down once rotating (seems as cack as the Funk Gett bearing I set up was). The arm is also elegant looking, but wobbles like an ARO (not another unstable unipivot?) and the fact they fit a Grado (well it is US made I suppose).. I like the separate motor pod which reminds me of the fondly remembered Spacedeck. No isolation at all by the look of it but maybe the Americans don't have springy floorboards or close-to-speaker issues as we seem to have (applies to Regas too as well as Pro-ject decks)
Maybe the above fears are groundless, but I've set up a turntable or three in my past and just get this 'vibe.' US price is Planar 2 category, so may be very interesting indeed. I suspect if it ever comes this way, it'd be around a grand once customs and distributors get their share, which is Planar 6 money (the Rega is getting on for 50% over it's UK price when bought in the US I think).
Interesting though if it doesn't crap out and if the arm can take a better cartridge. As stated in the ASR thread, a vinyl twiddler's wet dream - Rega make everything so effin' easy by comparison...

Looks like a giant killer to me. If I didn’t have a deck, I’d be after one.

Quite like that. The arm bearing looks interesting. Of course, it could turn out to be complete Schiit!

Will cost about a grand here. When I think what sort of TT set up you could buy used for a grand I can't see why anyone would go for this. For £300 more you could have a brand new Technics SL1200GR. In engineering terms that's like a Bugatti Veyron compared to a Daewoo Matiz. For an extra £300. And you don't have to assemble the Technics yourself either.

I came up with list of all manner of potential issues just looking at the bloody thing (churlish I'm sure) but one thing stands out on a day to day basis above all else - *It's a bloody dust trap* and believe me, that's a huge problem!

Bit of a write-up here on super gay friends site: www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/schiit-sol-turntable-sneak-peak.4747/page-9Have your pinches of salt at the ready: With some elbow grease and about $1000, such a setup will destroy any DAC in the mids and highs, have a transient response and dynamics that hangs with the best DACs, and be on par with the PCM1704 or ESS Sabre DACs in the bass. The older the recordings (back in the day), the better the results will be.

The more simple the better i say.If i ever used another deck which is a big no it would probably be something like the very first Funk Firm deck. I think the last deck i used was the Systemdek Oil Rig.. Was ok but i hate bouncy suspensions..

Got to admit I always liked the look of the basic funk firm turntables.

Only 1 problem I see that matters. The rubber band around the middle.
No thanks.

A top class DD will alway have better stability imo. I just prefer the POM it gives. I hated belt drives. I was always thinking the speed was out, and it usually was. The Sony DD turntable changed things for me and the SP10 that came later does the trick. I'd not go back to belt drive.

I’m sensitive to pitch stability and expected to hear differences in this when AB comparing Xerxes and PS-6740 with the same cartridge. Xerxes was every bit as pitch stable and sonically superior although very similar.

Xerxes was every bit as pitch stable and sonically superior although very similar. It's just and entirely untrustworthy method of rotation. The belt can slip or slacken off and next thing you know its off speed. No belter I've heard except the VPI got close to imparting zero effect on the sound. I don't know why but I've had 3 belters and 3 DD and the 3 DD have always sounded far more transparent. I'm not saying this in a sweeping statement as I'm sure that high end belters are probably far better but I just haven't heard anything that does. Oh, wait I have. A clearaudio concept TT with Ortofon 12" arm. That was superb. Better than the suped up Garrard 401 next to it. Different carts though. A £3k Dh1 on the Garrard and a 103r on the clear audio.

Bollox Oli as regards belt drives!
In my case, the 'platter' was 35kg sitting on a very hard close tolerance inverted bearing totally resistant to wear! ABSOLUTELY NO WOW AT ALL!!!!! The motor was set up to maintain rotation and no more (shades of Linn Lingo) and the belt was silicon so permanent-stretch free! Nobody in the UK buys these decks though as they're too fugly and heavy for LP12 fans and far too cheap and badly finished for lovers of twenty grand plus oil rigs... The graphite platter mated with the vinyl better than typical 'mats' too and you could pound a playing record with your fist and all that came though the speakers was a very muted faint 'thud.'
Technically, the SP10 used to be as good as it got, but get the plinth wrong and it all went out the window... While I'm in strict teacher mode, forget effin' Garrard 301's and 401's, they ALL rumble and add so much of their own character, even if 'we' love the sound coming out.

Im pitch sensitive & cannot hear any fluctuations with any of the best BD decks i have had.. One thing that make an horrific thought with Direct Drives is a great wacking motor bang under your Cartridge all the time.
Only problem i have ever encountered with AC Belt drives is cartridges pick up hum as it gets closer to the Motor, especially the Regas i have had. Never had this issue with Flywheel type deck such as the J.A Michells. These decks also get up to full speed as quick as any DD would. Heavily weighted platters that exhibit not speed drift.
As Dave says Forget Idlers. They rumble no matter what you do to them or how you house them. Had Garrard 301/401, Lencos etc.. Even wanted a Sparta but that would have gone the same way the others did.
btw: I had a Michell 'Focus One' with the original Belt for over 36 Years. Totally & utterly no issues what so ever. I know this cos it was only when i sold it i fitted a new one i bought as a spare just in case.

There are some belt drives that don't suffer from wow and flutter but not many. You can always hear it on piano. I'm not one of your golden ears types but it's obvious even to me. Linn, Systemdek, Rega, it's pretty obvious on all of them.
Might be getting mixed up as it is years ago now but I think Simon SQ has a belt drive TT that has no speed variation. Although he might have knocked it up himself.

There you go then. The whole thing is still way too much hassle for me these days, although I am still glad I bought loads of vinyl over the years as flogging it can fund my retirement

Ali, you've obviously never read my numerous posts regarding NAS decks or my waxing so lyrically about the Mentor plus Decca Microscanner I once owned and loved. I had a high speed Revox B77 IEC and tapes with which to compare. My current Dual 701 is acceptable as is a mid level Rega, but obviously doesn't set the world alight with it's more 'compact' sound presentation.

The accuracy argument is pointless though as digital made a mockery of all of it. Even a budget Sony CDP is more accurate than the best Otari RTR. And vinyl is way down there by comparison to that. Might as well just get the record player you like the sound of. But warbling on piano is still beyond acceptable IMO.

None of my Sh#t decks warble fortunately, although the 701 had a nasty habit of accelerating to frightening speeds which I think was a dry joint in the wiring - it's been stable a few years now. The SL150 I'm storing for a pal has got it's speed 'all over the shop' back and it's the presets on the board as well as the deck plate, together with the main switch (unobtainable). I'll have another go at cleaning then - it was a known issue for these after a few years neglect.
The Decca/Mentor was incredibly good and currently it'd be a Dias/Ace-Anna arm?/Decca Jubilee or similar. Nobody buys them in the UK it appears, so it's academic really. The Sol tonearm looks interesting though, but how it actually performs under the skin is anybody's guess - Rega keep their high tech development hidden from view mostly (bearing quality, tonearm internals and so on) so all you see is a plain over-familiar exterior.
