I was always interested in Tube Technology stuff but never tried any I owned a pair of Genesis mono amps. They shagged their quads of EL34's in under a year (should have been set for 50W rather then 100W) and when the suggestion was to go to GT valves, I could only bias one of the pair up as the motherboards had different bias resistors and these were inaccessible on to of the mobo under the top of the case. I sent them back via my dealer pal to be sorted and got rid pronto. Zia lost his wife some years back and not sure what happened to him thereafter. I used mine with the ES14's and an ARC SP14 preamp.
You'd hate the plain style, but a Croft Series 7 amp would sonically be a far better bet while keeping the 'valvey thang,' cheaper and more reliable too!

Been giving a lot of thought to the caps in the DCB1 and what I'm going to do about it. After a lot of deliberation I realised that in the BigBottle, I am absolutely convinced that the Vishay capacitors as as good as it gets, so why not try that here. I have ordered 4x 4700uf vishay caps and will fit them when they arrive. Hopefully they will do the trick.

Mundorfs always seem to take the life away IMO. Too Smooth What would you prefer? Well the Nichicon gold tune I had in originally were excellent. I shouldn't have messed with them. Trouble is, in researching nichicon it appears each value of cap has a three tier rating for quality. Type 1, 2 & 3 Its impossible to know who is selling what tier so I have the original ones and felt I shouldn't pass up the opportunity to try the Vishay. I swear by them in my phonostage so I'll see how they do. ESR is lower than the Nichicon so that's something lol

What is it with all these caps changing the sound? Are they directly in the signal path or something? I settled on FG years ago as a good compromise between foo and low cost in the few restoration projects I attended to here and they worked for me, the slight sharpness I *thought* I heard at first soon disappearing (or I got used to it) and I don't even think about it now. Best audio designs - to me - are those immune from the 'worst' of component 'differences' and Glenn Croft's are one such. If for example, Vishay caps, are inferior to Nichicon FG's of the same type, there must be a genuinely measurable reason why. In some cases, the circuit puts nasty demands on a cap (smps apparently need at least one very high voltage rated type (470V or so in some cases I've seen) as for various reasons, they get a very hard job to do. Wish I knew chapter and verse (with all the maths that goes with it) about such things, so I could speak with utter conviction

Why, that's anyone's guess but the best suggestion is that it's affecting the ripple or that it's a different construction material.

Got the grills off the 880's and was shocked to see a thick shag of dust. Unbelievable amounts. I have had to hoover the drivers lol. Madness but I have to say, they sound even better now for it. A few lose screws/bolts around the drivers but everything is nipped up and I've enjoyed an hour or so of listening. These are very serious speakers. Superb sound quality. I'm absolutely over the moon atm. Need to tame the bass a little but in the new position away from the wall, it's very manageable. The biggest issue I'm having is from the floor so I may have to put some granite bases down or something similar. panda baby called

It's a lie lol. There are a few polishing swirls on the top and a couple of marks but nothing terrible. Paint chip on the very bottom edge of one but I can fix that so it can't be seen. The drivers look brand new now they're clean though so that's a good thing. No clips on either grill, looks like they were glued on so ill need to repair the one grill carefully. I'm not complaining though, I always feel like when I repair something, it makes it mine so I'm happy to do it.

I'm wondering if Robin Marshall himself didn't have a hand in these. Some bits scream Epos to me, although he told me he had no say in the larger 'three way' Epos models as he was diverted away when he joined M-S. The smaller 3-10 and 3-20 were his and sounded it (really good I recall). but no idea at all on these.

Truth be told, the biggest area for improvement for me has to be knowledge in the speaker area.
I haven't spent anywhere near enough time trying and buying speakers.

No they're not by Robin Marshall, I can't think of the bloke who designed thems name right now but you'll have heard of him.

Andy Whittle? - He's also designed too many popular classics to begin to list them all......

Nice looking, time aligned, quality drivers, they deserve some decent outriggers.
