So are you going to get a proper case for it. If it's that good why not get Ant to knock you one up, giving it a posher feel. Well, this is a prototype and the sole intention of the "biscuit tin build" is to see if its worth pressing on with. The plan is to get it laid out nicely on a PCB. Ultimately whatever happens to it after that is not entirely up to me, but when we have some PCBs, I will certainly make a proper one in a nice case, with my usual standard of parts, and yes, i may just drop Ant a PM about a case, especially with the horrors being reported about ordering from China at the minute and my own issues with an order thats already over a month late.

Must say, this lockdown has been rather strange. I did barely any cables, phonostages or PCB's prior to the Lockdown, but a week in, it went absolutely bonkers! I have never been so busy....So what do I do? make myself even more work lol. The Neurochrome 686 has been waiting for a Toroid PSU for nearly a year, so with the recent acquisition of some bang tidy Nichicon Gold Tune reservoir caps sat gathering dust, I thought I ought to crack on and get this done. One of the things I have been frustrated with since taking ownership of the 686, was the XLR sockets. I can't criticise their performance as a connection, because they work as intended, but I am a huge believer in the contact material being significant. I paid a small fortune for XLR plugs on the Balanced Spotfire I made, and I just didn't want to commit to then having to spend big on XLR sockets too. I would have needed to buy 6 at £18 a piece.....couldn't do it. But not solely because of the Pirce, the inconvenience of the bloody things is staggering. So little gear I have through my house has XLR connections! I decided to convert the 686 to RCA. I will do this using these again: CMC-805-2.5CUR-G thick gold plate RCA sockets (shorturl.at/jMN14) There was some discussion about these sockets recently, when I proclaimed them to be *Pure Copper* I have now done some research and they are in fact Pure Copper, not a high copper content alloy etc. Don't believe me? Give CMC a shout. macca @sq give me a PM with your address, I have a little something to post to you both from Phonomac. I will wire these up with some Spotfire wire and I have some XLR to RCA adaptor plates to go with them. I'll have to nab some bridge rectifiers from somewhere, but the big thing is the Transformer acquisition. I am sorely tempted to go to Toroidy.pl for this one. It wont be cheap but I do think they are the best out there and the 686 deserves it. One thing I did wonder, was whether I should now add some speaker protection? I know Neurochrome does Guardian boards, but you can get the same thing for a lot less. Opinions on this please.

Ha that's the worst system ever, a Scottish preamp, a Scandinavian CDP and a Polish Dac, just kidding lol.

Didn't realise that Lampizator were Polish. Assumed they were yanks, don't know why.
Pretty sure that Philips are not Scandinavian though. Unless that just looks like a Philips badge at the weird angle of the photo. If not, what is it?

A real lashup tonight. I have abandoned all DAC tomfoolery and gone back to my PecanPi I really do think that sometimes the best fitting shoes are the only ones worth wearing, and the PecanPi for me just seems to sit very nicely inbetween the extremes of the Topping D90 and Lampizator Amber 3. I have decided that I'm going to develop my PecanPi a bit more. How?.....Well thats easy. I'm going to abandon the Raspberry Pi, and fit a USB module instead. After all, the best results from the Topping have been gained by this method of file supply, so I'll do the same to the PecanPi

I’ve looked at ‘enhanced’ pi’s as it makes sense. Did I miss your views on the Topping D90 then? How does it compare with the Pecan?

New transformer is now ordered for the 686. A proper toroidal PSU is on the cards for July along with a conversion from XLR to RCA. I have grown to loathe thebXLR sockets and feel like this must be taken care..
Looking forward to this.
